Beschreibung

Please note: PRIDE & PREJUDICE: BEHIND THE SCENES is a substantially revised version of the out-of-print Pride & Prejudice: The Scenes Jane Austen Never Wrote. Half of the scenes are new, never before published material. All royalties will be donated to Jane Austen related charities.

What did Mr. Darcy think when he first saw Elizabeth Bennet? How did Miss Bingley talk her brother out of proposing to Jane Bennet? And how did Lady Catherine de Bourgh find out Mr. Darcy was on the verge of proposing to Elizabeth? 15 authors of Austen-inspired fiction decided to answer these questions and more. Here are the scenes Jane Austen never wrote: ones that happened off stage, such as Mr. Collins proposing to Charlotte Lucas, and actual Pride and Prejudice scenes from the point of view of different characters.

PRIDE & PREJUDICE: BEHIND THE SCENES is not a complete novel in and of itself. It is a collection of scenes written independently and designed to complement the original. The reader can start at the beginning or dip into any scene they choose.

Contributing authors include Abigail Reynolds, Mary Simonsen, Susan Mason-Milks, Maria Grace, Jack Caldwell, C. Allyn Pierson, Shannon Winslow, Colette Saucier, Jane Odiwe, Monica Fairview, Diana Birchall, Marilyn Brant, Kara Louise, Cassandra Grafton and L.L. Diamond.

The Tell-Tale Heart is a clever classical gothic horror story birthed in 1843, by the quintessential short story extraordinaire, Edgar Allan Poe. In this thrilling rollercoaster tale, we are granted access to the workings of the narrator’s heart - namely the confessions of the heart as well as the lack of having one.The unnamed dubious narrator and the obsessive loquacious speech ignite an array of topical themes including empathy, delusions of grandeur as well as its next of kin - mental health.Edgar Allan Poe’s legacy is rightfully etched in the Western canon and his prowess is often imitated but never duplicated. That simply is not possible given his unique adroitness in the short story genre. It is nonetheless lamentable that he only received his proverbial flowers for his spellbinding storytelling, posthumously. Without question, The Tell-Tale Heart accounts for a sizeable and significant part of his belated bouquet.1843 also gave birth to The Black Cat. This is arguably Poe’s darkest literary piece which bleeds the themes of brazen blame gaming, alcoholism, domestic violence and the inescapability of one reaping what one has sown. Sheer suspense on steroids! The Paperback version also includes an excellent bonus section entitled - 'His Penmanship Bled Alcohol'.

Elizabeth Gaskell (1810-1865) was a well known British novelist at one of the peak eras for female writers in England. A novelist and short story writer at the height of the Victorian Era, Gaskells novels weave a comprehensive, detailed image of the lives of all kinds of different classes in society during that age, ranging from the very poor to the cream of the aristocratic crop. Of course, given the era in which she wrote, Mrs. Gaskells writing included a wonderful style of prose that still continues to please literary critics, even while discussing the general themes of the day like religion and poverty. While novels like North and South dazzled readers, her short stories, particularly Gothic ghost stories, caught the eye of no less a writer than Charles Dickens, who helped get her stories published during the middle of the 19th century.

Ethan Frome, a poor, downtrodden New England farmer, is trapped in a loveless marriage to his invalid wife, Zeena. His ambition and intelligence are oppressed by Zeena's cold, conniving character. When Zeena's young cousin Mattie arrives to help care for her, Ethan is immediately taken by Mattie's warm, vivacious personality. They fall desperately in love as he realizes how much is missing from his life and marriage. Tragically, their love is doomed by Zeena's ever-lurking presence and by the social conventions of the day. Ethan remains torn between his sense of obligation and his urge to satisfy his heart's desire up to the suspenseful and unanticipated conclusion. Perhaps reflective of Wharton's own loveless marriage, this sophisticated, star-crossed love story vividly depicts her abhorrence of society's relentless standards of loyalty. Ethan Frome is one of Wharton's most popular and best-known works.
