Beschreibung

'…the joy of reading Maggie Gee.' – The Observer
The people in The Blue, Maggie Gee's first collection of short stories, try and often fail to understand the world, freeing themselves by small acts of courage, love or folly. A journalist decides to convert an evangelist in mid-air; a solicitor gives up his day job to help young artists; a Middle Eastern woman shocks her children as she walks through the heat towards the sea; a man, in a moment of madness, cuts down his neighbour's tree.
These subtle fables of everyday life are set against an intricate global backdrop where life is harder for outsiders. Exquisitely written and aerated by comedy, they show human beings who struggle to live good lives.

Mother Goose in Prose is a collection of twenty-two children's stories based on Mother Goose nursery rhymes. It was the first children's book written by author L. Frank Baum, published in 1897. The author himself gives a great introduction to the book: "Many of these nursery rhymes are complete tales in themselves, telling their story tersely but completely; there are others which are but bare suggestions, leaving the imagination to weave in the details of the story. Perhaps therein may lie part of their charm, but however, that may be I have thought the children might like the stories told at greater length, that they may dwell the longer upon their favorite heroes and heroines. For that reason, I have written this book."

Mark Twain is one of the most important figures in American life and American culture as a whole. He is connected by the innumerable threads with the course of development of the country, its national characteristics and social contradictions, and this deep connection significantly extends throughout his work. This short story, called “The Scriptural Panoramist”, tells about a man who earns a living, showing in the churches different panoramas in the biblical theme and commenting them. Once he hired an old man, to play the piano, accompanying the pictures with a suitable melody. And the old musician actually did it... But the melodies selection has been very peculiar.A SmartTouch Media production.

'The Shadow in the Rose Garden'. Lawrence is often accused of misogyny and this story used as evidence against him. There is the simple but honest mine worker, who has taken on a wife who is 'above' him but who is struggling to understand her and her feelings for him. Slowly, the story unravels the woman's past. The reader cannot be entirely unsympathetic to her plight, Lawrence is too good a writer to let that happen, but her dishonesty has probably ruined two lives and our feelings are for the husband.

Lifted Masks (1912) contains 13 well written, moving short stories by Susan Glaspell. Appetizer—a summary from chapter I. "ONE OF THOSE IMPOSSIBLE AMERICANS": a big fat American tries to buy extravagant clothes to his wife on his trip in Paris. He is lost in shopping, when Virginia, a young and small American girl comes to his aid. She looks down on him, who could be his father, but they spend the afternoon and a lot of money together. When they have a break, he shares his story with her: "Young Lady, what do you think of this? I'm worth more 'an a million dollars—and my wife gets up at five o'clock every morning to do washing and scrubbing." They were poor for 20 years and her wife was too faithful in her duties serving him. For 7 years she was not able adjust to being rich, and apparently lost her mind. This makes his heart sore, since he cannot share the joy with his wife. Virginia is deeply touched by that, and now she is eager to find the perfect gift for his wife.

By the New York Times–bestselling author of Evening in Paradise, poignant, personal short stories for fans of Grace Paley, Annie Proulx, and Alice Munro. In 1990, Black Sparrow Press published Lucia Berlin’s first full-length collection of stories and remained her publisher until her passing in 2004. With the recent publication of A Manual for Cleaning Women, and the sustained critical acclaim it has received, Berlin has finally been recognized as a master of the short story, allowing her work to reach the broad audience it deserves. This collection captures distilled moments of crisis or epiphany, placing the protagonists in moments of stress or personal strain, and all told in an almost offhand, matter of fact voice. Weaving through the places she loved–Chile, Mexico, the Southwest, and California–each story delivers a poignant moment that lingers in the mind, not resolved, not decoded, but resonating, as questions of the human condition always do, in the heart of the reader.Praise for So Long“Affecting . . . Compelling . . . Remarkably successful. Berlin places her memorable characters in gripping situations, plumbing their messed-up lives for pathos and allowing us to see deeply into their souls.” —Publishers Weekly“Most of the twenty-three stories in this collection are very short and very simple. They . . . have the casual, straightforward, immediate, and intimate style that distinguishes her work. They are told in a conversational voice and they move with a swift and often lyrical economy. They capture and communicate moments of grace and cast a lovely, lazy light that lasts. Berlin is one of our finest writers and here she is at the height of her powers.” —Molly Giles, San Francisco Chronicle
