Smitten with a beautiful and cultivated young woman, a bright but uncultured sailor determines to better himself intellectually and socially. Martin Eden turns his attention and energy from drinking and brawling to an aggressive pursuit of self-education through reading. Martin's determined striving leads to a resolve to become a writer himself, but his success comes at the price of disillusionment, leaving him stranded between his proletariat origins and the bourgeois world. Originally published in 1909, Jack London's semi-autobiographical novel reflects the painful struggles with learning that led to his eventual achievement of literary fame. Martin Eden addresses the author's internal conflict between his dream of a cooperative socialist utopia and his survival-of-the-fittest evolutionary views. Widely considered London's most mature work, the book abounds in memorable characters and settings as well as thought-provoking explorations of the nature of love, the importance of remaining true to personal aspirations rather than others' expectations, and the injustice of class divisions.

"The Evil Clergyman" is an excerpt from a letter written by American horror fiction writer H. P. Lovecraft in 1933. After his death, it was published in the April 1939 issue of Weird Tales as a short story. The story begins in the attic of an ancient house. The narrator's companion refers to the former owner of the house and the presumably violent end that befell him. He advises the narrator not to stay after dark or touch anything, especially the small object on a table, which the companion seems to fear considerably.

William Wymark Jacobs (1863 - 1943) was an English author of short stories and novels. Most of his works were either humorous tales or horror stories. Many of his popular tales are written in the cockney vernacular and are based either on the docks at Wapping, or in the bar of the infamous tavern The Cauliflower.'A Tiger's Skin' is a tale narrated by the oldest regular at The Cauliflower. It is the story of the Claybury tiger...a beast which had apparently escaped from a travelling circus and terrorises the clientele of the Cauliflower and the rest of Claybury village.Every night pigs, hens and ducks disappear from their owners' yards. But nobody has seen the tiger...until suddenly, in the space of a few days, nearly every resident seems to have an encounter with the Claybury tiger. Then old man Parsley rushes into the Cauliflower with the terrible news that he has seen the tiger going into Bob Pretty's cottage and the courage of the Claybury men is put to the test....

The 15th-century Arabian text The Perfumed Garden stands with India's The Karma Sutra as one of the greatest erotic texts in classic literature. It is primarily a manual for sexual activity of all kinds, dealing in some considerable detail with physical attributes, foreplay, coital positions and advice for how to achieve greater satisfaction for both partners, as well as sexual health. In addition, it contains some enlivening stories of sexual encounters and sexual needs fulfilled. Jonathan reads Richard Burton's famous 1886 translation with aplomb.
