Beschreibung

AMY FOSTER

By Joseph Conrad

Kennedy is a country doctor, and lives in Colebrook, on the shores of Eastbay. The high ground rising abruptly behind the red roofs of the little town crowds the quaint High Street against the wall which defends it from the sea. Beyond the sea-wall there curves for miles in a vast and regular sweep the barren beach of shingle, with the village of Brenzett standing out darkly across the water, a spire in a clump of trees; and still further out the perpendicular column of a lighthouse, looking in the distance no bigger than a lead pencil, marks the vanishing-point of the land. The country at the back of Brenzett is low and flat, but the bay is fairly well sheltered from the seas, and occasionally a big ship, windbound or through stress of weather, makes use of the anchoring ground a mile and a half due north from you as you stand at the back door of the "Ship Inn" in Brenzett. A dilapidated windmill near by lifting its shattered arms from a mound no loftier than a rubbish heap, and a Martello tower squatting at the water's edge half a mile to the south of the Coastguard cottages, are familiar to the skippers of small craft. These are the official seamarks for the patch of trustworthy bottom represented on the Admiralty charts by an irregular oval of dots enclosing several figures six, with a tiny anchor engraved among them, and the legend "mud and shells" over all.

Christopher Carson, or as he was familiarly called, Kit Carson, was a man whose real worth was understood only by those with whom he was associated or who closely studied his character. He was more than a hunter, trapper, guide, Indian agent, and Colonel in the United States Army...His lot was cast on the extreme western frontier, where, when but a youth, he earned the respect of the tough and frequently lawless men with whom he came in contact. Integrity, bravery, loyalty to friends, marvelous quickness in making the right decisions, in a crisis of danger, consummate knowledge of woodcraft, a leadership as skillful as it was daring; all these were distinguishing traits in the composition of Carson and were the foundations of the broader fame which he acquired as the friend and invaluable counselor of Fremont, the Pathfinder, in his expeditions across the Rocky Mountains. This is his story!

Kendall Jackson, a twenty-five-year-old male who lives at home with his mother and two sisters, finds his life spiraling out of control after a failed relationship. He becomes deeply depressed, stops going to work, and is subsequently fired.
Filled with rage, he decides to declare war against God. Kendall intentionally targets Christian women. His hope is to seduce women into lustful, uncommitted relations to make them question their faith; just as he had. Unfortunately, Kendall didn’t plan on God having a plan.
God brings into Kendall’s life a young woman who introduces him to the original movie, Left Behind (2000). The movie had such a strong impact on his life that it causes him to investigate whether or not the events in the movie could truly happen.
As a result, Kendall experiences a spiritual encounter so surreal that neither the church nor the world can adequately explain what happened. The real question now is whether or not the answer he received is from God or Satan.

“The selection of remembered events from a cross section of Germans provides a very human account of instances in war.” —Firetrench

The first in a series of books, I Somehow Survived is an extraordinary collection of true stories giving testimony to those who survived World War II. Based on interviews with numerous veterans from across the spectrum of wartime experience, the book documents and reflects upon one of the most gruesome times in history.

From anti-partisan warfare in the French mountains and atrocities in East Prussia to the experience of a Norwegian concentration camp, the accounts include rarely heard stories from a range of people caught up in the war. With the distance of time, these survivors have been able to offer new perspectives on their experiences and expose truths they would not have dared admit several decades ago.

German Army officers reveal their role in the Vercors and Kiev massacres. A Luftwaffe officer-applicant who never flew describes service on the ground. And a Norwegian woman writes of marrying a German Kriegsmarine while her mother was in a Norwegian concentration camp for political activity and her father was in hiding from the Gestapo. “I have no objection to your marrying him,” her father told her, “I just want them to give us our country back.”

“It is always refreshing to hear the German side of the story. The recollections seem pretty open and candid, and the supporting photos help reassure one . . . fascinating stuff.” —A Question of Scale

Queen of the plaintive voice, the Torch resound
Witness of secret Loves, the Lover sing
On midnight billows borne to rapt'rous joys,
Veil'd from Aurora's eye; the realms relate,
By Ocean fever'd, join'd by Love.———I hear Leander dashing through the surge, I see
     The glitt'ring Harbinger; benignant Light,
Fix'd by Olympus' King thy silver ray
Would grace the radiant spheres, auspicious Star,
Guardian of nuptial vows, for thine the task
To sooth the love-sick heart, ere hostil blasts
Howl'd o'er the deep, a whirlwind of despair:
Inspire the tale of woe, celestial Muse,
The Torch expiring falls, the Lover dies.
