Horatio Herbert Kitchener was Irish by birth but English by extraction, being born in County Kerry, the son of an English colonel. The fanciful might see in this first and accidental fact the presence of this simple and practical man amid the more mystical western problems and dreams which were very distant from his mind, an element which clings to all his career and gives it an unconscious poetry. He had many qualities of the epic hero, and especially this -- that he was the last man in the world to be the epic poet. There is something almost provocative to superstition in the way in which he stands at every turn as the symbol of the special trials and the modern transfiguration of England; from this moment when he was born among the peasants of Ireland to the moment when he died upon the sea, seeking at the other end of the world the other great peasant civilisation of Russia. Yet at each of these symbolic moments he is, if not as unconscious as a symbol, then as silent as a symbol; he is speechless and supremely significant, like an ensign or a flag. The superficial picturesqueness of his life, at least, lies very much in this -- that he was like a hero condemned by fate to act an allegoryZum Buch
The Sorrows of Werther (German: Die Leiden des jungen Werthers) is a loosely autobiographical epistolary novel by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, first published in 1774. A revised edition followed in 1787. It was one of the most important novels in the Sturm und Drang period in German literature, and influenced the later Romantic movement. Goethe, aged 24 at the time, finished Werther in five-and-a-half weeks of intensive writing in January-March 1774. The book's publication instantly placed the author among the foremost international literary celebrities, and was among the best known of his works. Most of The Sorrows of Young Werther is presented as a collection of letters written by Werther, a young artist of a sensitive and passionate temperament, to his friend Wilhelm. These give an intimate account of his stay in the fictional village of Wahlheim (based on Garbenheim, near Wetzlar), whose peasants have enchanted him with their simple ways. There he meets Charlotte, a beautiful young girl who takes care of her siblings after the death of their mother. Werther falls in love with Charlotte despite knowing beforehand that she is engaged to a man named Albert, eleven years her senior.Zum Buch

A woman in distress, a handsome hero, a dangerous villain, physical action, psychological suspense and real scares all cohabit in this classic tale with quite a bit of a gothic feel to it: "Never, it seemed to me, had I seen a habitation so grim, so silently suggestive of haunting, evil things… The wind moaned through the trees like the wail of a lost soul." Artist Bio Author: Alice Muriel Williamson (1869-1933), was an English novelist. Many of her books were written jointly with her husband Charles Norris Williamson. One of Dickens' best loved short stories, The Signalman is the mysterious tale of a railway worker haunted by premonitions of disaster. The titular signalman works on a remote and forbidding part of the line, and finds himself with an unexpected visitor in the form of a tourist (the story's narrator), but the travelling man is not the only stranger the signalman encounters at his post. Part supernatural horror and part phycological thriller, this entertaining short is a paragon of the Victorian ghost story. First published in Mugby Junction, 1866.Zum Buch
