Mark Twain, Bret Harte, Ina Coolbrith, and Charles Stoddard are the four San Francisco Bohemian writers of the 1860s who set the course for American literature. This Mark Twain Valentine audiobook tells the story of their love triangle.
Mark Twain made sure that his full true-life story would not be told for 100 years after his death, so this story has never been heard publicly before!
Make a date with your sweetheart to listen in!
Mark Twain became a credited author for the first time while in San Francisco, a hundred years before the Summer of Love, with the publication of The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County. Twain and the other San Francisco Bohemian writers were in their twenties at the time. The de Young brothers were in their teens when they started the San Francisco Chronicle with Mark Twain as a reporter!
Bret Harte was the leader and mentor of San Francisco’s Bohemian writers, and Mark Twain competed with Bret for the attention of the enchanting poet Ina Coolbrith. This is the story of how that turned out... details kept from the public for over 160 years.
Ina held salons in her home on Russian Hill for her Bohemian friends and their patrons, which became the foundation for the Bohemian Club. Ina later became Oakland’s first librarian (where she mentored Jack London) and became the first poet laureate of any state. But the love triangle occurred during an earlier, more tumultuous time as the American Civil War was being brought to a close and San Francisco grew in sophistication.
This two-hour audiobook is important California history told with the droll sarcasm unique to Mark Twain. It should not be missed!

From Papantla in Mexico—“the city that perfumed the world”—to the Indian Ocean islands, Vanilla traces the story of the vanilla plant and its secretive trade.   From the golden cups of Aztec emperors to the ice cream dishes of US presidents, vanilla has mystified and tantalized man for centuries. The only orchid that produces an agriculturally valuable crop, vanilla can mask unpleasant tastes and smells, but also makes pleasant tastes stronger, smoother, and longer lasting. Because it has over four hundred separate flavor components, choosing premium vanilla beans is as complex as judging the aroma and taste of fine wine. Vanilla finds its way into over half of all dessert products sold worldwide, as well as the finest perfumes, well-known brands of rum and vodka, and even Coca-Cola and Pepsi. Americans consume more vanilla than anyone else on Earth—a fact that has forced growers and traders to mount armed guards over their plants in the tropical jungle. The traders who travel the world in search of America’s favorite flavor are a small and secretive elite. Vanilla is a globetrotting adventure that follows buccaneers, aristocrats, and gourmets, all in search of the ice cream orchid.

What begins with simple observations from a Utah transplant to Wyoming becomes an ode to family and place, and perhaps an elegy for it all.” —Jeffe Kennedy, author of Wyoming Trucks, True Love, and the Weather ChannelIn this unconventional memoir, Kevin Holdsworth vividly portrays life in remote, unpredictable country and ruminates on the guts—or foolishness—it takes to put down roots and raise a family in a merciless environment.Growing up in Utah, Holdsworth couldn’t wait to move away. Once ensconced on the East Coast, however, he found himself writing westerns and dreaming of the mountains he’d skied and climbed. Fed up with city life, he moved to a small Wyoming town.In Big Wonderful, he writes of a mountaineering companion’s death, the difficult birth of his son, and his father’s terminal illness—encounters with mortality that sharpened his ideas about risk, care, and commitment. He puts a new spin on mountaineering literature, telling wild tales from his reunion with the mountains but also relating the surprising willpower it took to turn back from risks he would have taken before he became a father. He found he needed courage to protect and engage deeply with his family, his community, and the wild places he loves.Holdsworth’s essays and poems are rich with anecdotes, characters, and vivid images. Readers will feel as if they themselves watched a bear destroy an entire expedition’s food, walked with his great-great-grandmother along the icy Mormon Trail, and tried to plant a garden in Wyoming’s infamous wind.Readers who love the outdoors will eagerly partake, as “Holdsworth invites us to sit down at his literary campfire and listen to vivid, unforgettable stories” (High Country News).

Ornans, Courbet’s birthplace, is near the beautiful valley of the Doubs River, and it was here as a boy, and later as a man, that he absorbed the love of landscape.
He was by nature a revolutionary, a man born to oppose existing order and to assert his independence; he had that quality of bluster and brutality which makes the revolutionary count in art as well as in politics. In both directions his spirit of revolt manifested itself. He went to Paris to study art, yet he did not attach himself to the studio of any of the prominent masters. Already in his country home he had had a little instruction in painting, and preferred to study the masterpieces of the Louvre. At first his pictures were not sufficiently distinctive to arouse any opposition, and were admitted to the Salon. Then followed the Funeral at Ornans, which the critics violently assailed: “A masquerade funeral, six metres long, in which there is more to laugh at than to weep over.” Indeed, the real offence of Courbet’s pictures was that they represented live flesh and blood. They depicted men and women as they really are and realistically doing the business in which they are engaged. His figures were not men and women deprived of personality and idealised into a type, posed in positions that will decorate the canvas. He advocated painting things as they are, and proclaimed that la vérité vraie must be the aim of the artist. So at the Universal Exposition of 1855 he withdrew his pictures from the exhibition grounds and set them in a wooden booth, just outside the entrance. Over the booth he posted a sign with large lettering. It read, simply: “Courbet – Realist.” Like every revolutionary, he was an extremist. He ignored the fact that to every artist the truth of nature appears under a different guise according to his way of seeing and experiencing. Instead, he adhered to the notion that art is only a copying of nature and not a matter also of selection and arrangement. In his contempt for prettiness Courbet often chose subjects which may fairly be called ugly. But that he also had a sense of beauty may be seen in his landscapes. That sense, mingled with his capacity for deep emotion, appears in his marines – these last being his most impressive work. Moreover, in all his works, whether attractive or not to the observer, he proved himself a powerful painter, painting in a broad, free manner, with a fine feeling for colour, and with a firmness of pigment that made all his representations very real and stirring.
