Beschreibung

John Payne was born on 23rd August 1842 in Bloomsbury, London.
He began his career in the legal profession but thus was soon put to one side as he began his renowned translations of Boccaccio's Decameron, The Arabian Nights, and then the poets Omar Khayyam, François Villon and Diwan Hafez. Of the latter, who he ranked in the same bracket as Dante and Shakepeare, he said; he takes the "whole sweep of human experience and irradiates all things with his sun-gold and his wisdom".
Later Payne became involved with limited edition publishing, and the Villon Society, which was dedicated to the poems of François Villon who was Frances’ best known poet of the middle Ages and unfortunately also a thief and a murderer.
John Payne died on 11th February, 1916 at the age of 73 in South Kensington, London.

Created by Irving Brecher, The Life of Riley starred William Bendix as Brooklyn-born Chester A. Riley, a family man who worked as an airplane riveter at the fictional Cunningham Aircraft plant in California. The stories were usually set at home, cheerfully disrupting life with his malapropisms and ill-timed intervention into minor problems. His stock answer to every turn of fate "what a revoltin' development this is!" became a popular catch phrase. Paula Winslowe was Riley's wife, Peg; John Brown doubled as undertaker "Digger" O'Dell and as Riley's co-worker, Jim Gillis; Tommy Cook, Bobby Ellis and Scotty Beckett each played the role of Riley's son, Junior; and Sharon Douglas played the Riley's daughter, Babs. Alan Reed (the voice of Fred Flintstone) played multiple characters, including Riley's boss, Mr. Stevenson and Peg's father. Whereas Gillis gave Riley bad advice that got him into trouble, Digger gave him good advice that "helped him out of a hole." The Life of Riley aired on radio from 1944 until 1951 making a successful transition to television in 1949. Due to a contract dispute, Bendix couldn't initially play Riley on television so the role went to Jackie Gleason. In 1953, William Bendix was free to star as Riley on the small screen and continued with it until 1958.

Juan, captured by Turkish pirates and sold into slavery is bought by a beautiful Princess as her toy-boy. Dressed as an odalisque, he is smuggled into the Sultan's harem for a steamy assignation. Unbelievably, Byron's publisher almost baulked at this feast of allusive irony, blasphemy (mild), calumny, scorn, lesse-majeste, cross-dressing, bestiality, assassination, circumcision and dwarf-tossing. This was the last Canto published by the stuffy John Murray (who had, however, made a tidy fortune on the earlier parts of the Epic). Although Byron's mood starts, after this, to grow darker and his bitterness at English hypocrisy to grow sharper, his discursive comedy and precise and intriguing rhyme is rarely better than in Canto V. (Summary by Peter Gallagher)
