Beschreibung

This comprehensive guide to forensic investigation “delivers the goods for the educated layperson . . . readers will be hard-pressed to put it down” (USA Today).   Forensic experts Joe Nickell and John Fischer introduce readers to the work of firearms experts, document examiners, fingerprint technicians, medical examiners, and forensic anthropologists. These topics are explained in clear terms without technical jargon.   Nickell and Fisher describe fingerprint classification and autopsies, explain how fibers link victims to their killers, and examine the science underlying DNA profiling and toxicological analysis. From weapons analysis to handwriting samples to shoe and tire impressions, Crime Science outlines the indispensable tools and techniques that investigators use to make sense of a crime scene.   Each chapter closes with a study of an infamous case to demonstrate how the principles of forensic science work in practice. Case studies including the O.J. Simpson trial, the Lindbergh kidnapping, the death of Marilyn Monroe, the World Trade Center bombing, the assassination of the Romanovs, and the Atlanta child murders.

Feature-Driven Development is one of six recognized major agile development methodologies. FDD and Jeff De Luca are a part of the Agile Software Consortium, and FDD was one of the original agile methodologies represented at the signing of the Agile Manifesto. While most recent writing about agile has concerned Scrum and Extreme Programming (XP), there are still a sizable number of people succeeding in agile software development using the FDD method. In this 60-minute interview with Jeff De Luca, the co-creator of the FDD method, he tells us about the story behind the development of the FDD approach: how it was conceived, its early evolution, and how it was introduced to development teams and organizations.Topics Covered What is Feature-Driven Development? What sparked the original idea for its creation? What/Who influenced its structure? How was it first used? What early lessons helped change the approach to the format we know today? How was it first introduced to the broader software development community, and what were the reactions? And answers to questions raised by the audience

Michael S. Gazzaniga, one of the most important neuroscientists of the twentieth century, gives us an exciting behind-the-scenes look at his seminal work on that unlikely couple, the right and left brain. Foreword by Steven Pinker. In the mid-twentieth century, Michael S. Gazzaniga, “the father of cognitive neuroscience,” was part of a team of pioneering neuroscientists who developed the now foundational split-brain brain theory: the notion that the right and left hemispheres of the brain can act independently from one another and have different strengths. In Tales from Both Sides of the Brain, Gazzaniga tells the impassioned story of his life in science and his decades-long journey to understand how the separate spheres of our brains communicate and miscommunicate with their separate agendas. By turns humorous and moving, Tales from Both Sides of the Brain interweaves Gazzaniga’s scientific achievements with his reflections on the challenges and thrills of working as a scientist. In his engaging and accessible style, he paints a vivid portrait not only of his discovery of split-brain theory, but also of his comrades in arms—the many patients, friends, and family who have accompanied him on this wild ride of intellectual discovery.

A manned mission to Mars has been the dream of humanity at least since the nineteenth century when we first saw details of the surface and thought there might be canals filled with water there.
Here I’ve looked at the history of unmanned exploration of Mars over the last fifty plus years, proposed missions to Mars, Mars Settlements, and other major issues regarding traveling to and living on Mars. Some proposals have lots of details of proposed scenarios if you want to read all of the engineering and scientific analysis work.
I grew up in the 1960s when every kid in America was fascinated with the Space program and the Astronauts. I also watched not only the Apollo 11 moon landing, but all of the successive trips to the Moon and exploration of the surface. This may be a lot of the reason I became and Engineer, worked as NASA in Houston for several years, and applied to the Astronaut Program myself.
My previous books on space are titled “Designing and Building Space Colonies-A Blueprint for the Future” and “All about Moon Bases-And Our Plans to Return to the Moon”. This book is written from a similar perspective.
There are some probes which reported life on Mars and then other scientists questioned the results. We are still sending unmanned probes today to try to answer those questions.
These three books will comprise the first three of my “Living in Space” series of books

A crisp, passionately argued answer to the question that everyone who's grown dependent on digital devices is asking: "Where's the rest of my life?"At a time when we're all trying to make sense of our relentlessly connected lives, this revelatory book presents a bold new approach to the digital age. Part intellectual journey, part memoir, Hamlet's BlackBerry sets out to solve what William Powers calls the conundrum of connectedness. Our computers and mobile devices do wonderful things for us. But they also impose an enormous burden, making it harder for us to focus, do our best work, build strong relationships, and find the depth and fulfillment we crave.Hamlet's BlackBerry argues that we need a new way of thinking, an everyday philosophy for life with screens. To find it, Powers reaches into the past, uncovering a rich trove of ideas that have helped people manage and enjoy their connected lives for thousands of years. New technologies have always brought the mix of excitement and stress that we feel today. Drawing on some of history's most brilliant thinkers, from Plato to Shakespeare to Thoreau, he shows that digital connectedness serves us best when it's balanced by its opposite, disconnectedness. Using his own life as laboratory and object lesson, Powers demonstrates why this is the moment to revisit our relationship to screens and mobile technologies, and how profound the rewards of doing so can be. Lively, original, and entertaining, Hamlet's BlackBerry will challenge you to rethink your digital life.

A detailed look at the state’s most terrifying and destructive disasters—photos included.   Home to hundreds of faults, California leads the nation in frequency of earthquakes every year. And despite enduring their share of the natural disasters, residents still speculate over the inevitable “big one.”   More than three thousand people lost their lives during the 1906 San Francisco earthquake. Long Beach’s 1933 earthquake caused nearly $50 million in damages. And the Northridge earthquake injured thousands and left a $550 million economic hit. In this book, historian Abraham Hoffman explores the personal accounts and aftermath of California’s most destructive tremors.
