In the early 1980s, a golden generation of volleyball players joined the U.S. men's national team. With the Olympics coming to Los Angeles in 1984, the pressure was on to build a winning program around these exceptional athletes. In If Gold Is Our Destiny, Sean P. Murray shares the incredible story of how a group of free-spirited players and their demanding coach captured the heart of a nation and became one of the greatest indoor volleyball teams of all time. As the team struggled leading up to the Olympics, head coach Doug Beal mandated a highly controversial three-week Outward Bound hike across one hundred miles in the Canyonlands and Abajo Mountains in Utah. Murray details all the internal strife and heartwarming triumphs from this unprecedented trip, as players and coaches learned to cooperate and trust one another. He reveals how the team used this newfound trust to implement an innovative approach to volleyball that changed not only their success on the court but the sport itself on a global scale.Featuring original interviews with players, coaches, and staff, along with a foreword by three-time gold medal champion Karch Kiraly, If Gold Is Our Destiny delivers an inside look at what it takes for a group of talented individuals to overcome their differences, build a culture of excellence, and become the best in the world.

Uncover the true story behind the tragic Munich air disaster of 6 February 1958, the night that 8 of the Manchester United's 'Busby Babes' died

They were players about to become legends, the famous Manchester United 'Busby Babes', the back-to-back title winning side of 1956 and 1957 on the hunt for a third successive league win and seeking glory in the European Champions Cup. With an average age of 22, the 'Busby Babes' were the cream of English football and seemed destined to dominate English and European football for years to come.

Instead, on 6 February 1958, they were tragically cut down in their prime. On a fuel stopover on their way home from a Champions Cup fixture against Red Star Belgrade, British European Airways Flight 609 crashed on its third attempt to take off in a blizzard from an ice- and slush-covered runway at Munich Airport.

The fatal crash claimed the lives of 23 passengers and crew, including 8 Manchester United footballers. 7 United players were killed instantly in the crash. Three weeks later, the legendary Duncan Edwards died in hospital while two other players, Jackie Blanchflower and Johnny Berry, were injured so badly that they never played again.

What caused the plane to careen off the runway? Why did experienced pilot Captain James Thain insist on taking off in such treacherous conditions? Why were the Manchester United management under pressure to return to England as soon as possible?

The German inquiry blamed the accident on pilot error. However, Stephen Morrin's The Munich Air Disaster establishes beyond any question that this was not so. Based on his enormous technical knowledge of aircraft accident investigation, years of research and interviews with those involved, Morrin shows that the pilot, Captain James Thain, performed heroically and was shamefully treated by the aviation authorities for many years.

The crash at Munich airport swept away a generation of gifted footballers including Tommy Taylor, Roger Byrne, David Pegg, and Liam Whelan from Dublin. Stephen Morrin's authoritative book is a story of tragedy, a pilot's heroism in adversity, legal treachery and one of the defining moments in the Manchester United story. It was a sporting disaster that gave birth to a legend — a legend which fifty years later shows no sign of diminishing.

From a ninth Dan Master, a guide to disabling anyone using minimal force, with 300 step-by-step photos showing each vital point and strike.

Ancient martial arts legends tell of masters who possess a mysterious ability to defeat an opponent—and in some cases even cause death—with one perfectly placed blow. The Secret Art of Pressure Point Fighting transforms the myth into a modern, anatomically—based self-defense technique that allows smaller defenders to defeat larger attackers by striking at the vulnerable points on their bodies.

Written by one of the world’s leading authorities and clearly illustrated with photos of each pressure point, this book shows how knowledge of the body’s vulnerable points can enhance both competitive fighting and personal self-defense skills. The Secret Art of Pressure Point Fighting doesn’t teach theoretical strikes, it presents the actual moves used throughout the world by military special forces and law enforcement agencies to disable opponents as quickly as possible. The moves in this book are straightforward and easy to learn. They are designed to empower anyone—regardless of size or physical strength—with the ability to stop an attacker using a minimal amount of physical strength.
