Beschreibung

Stories about children are not always for children. In The Watercress Girl, H. E. Bates masterfully depicts a childhood which, by proxy, reveals the mystifying world of the adult. Through a series of short, lyrical stories, the complexities of the world are seen with crystalline purity through the eyes of children. We experience the joyous and painful clarity of youth, full of fears, hopes and make-believe, and the trust and mistrust of the adult world.

A little boy, charmed by the golden-throated Miss Mortenson, witnesses her fall from grace in 'The Pemberton Thrush'. Three children become entangled in a forbidden love when they witness a man attempting suicide in 'A Great Day for Bonzo', and a father reveals more of his past than he intends to in 'The Far Distant Journey'.

First published in 1959, The Watercress Girl is a rich collection of stories, exploring a world full of wonder but also of unease; an unease of not yet understanding the world or being fully part of it.
Verfügbar seit: 25.06.2015.

Long before the latest vogue for autofiction, Michele Mari, one of Italy's most beloved authors, cast his mind back to the days of his own childhood, and found it crawling with monsters.
Raised on comic books and science fiction, the young Mari constructed an alternate universe for himself untouched by uncomprehending grownups or sadistic peers. Compared to the horrors of real life, Long John Silver and Cthulhu made for positively cuddly company; but little boys raised by beasts may well grow up beastly – or never grow up at all. Waking or sleeping, the obsessions of Mari's youth seem to colour his every adult thought. You, Bleeding Childhood stands as his first attempt to catalogue this cabinet of wonders.

Cult classics since their first publication, these loosely connected stories stand as the ideal introduction to an encyclopedic fantasist on a par with Kafka, Poe, and Borges.

William Fryer Harvey (1885-1937) was an English writer of short stories, most notably in the mystery and horror genres.Born into a wealthy Quaker family in Yorkshire, he went to Balliol College, Oxford, and took a degree in medicine at Leeds. Ill health dogged him, however, and he devoted much of his recuperation to writing short stories. "Unwinding" is a strange story based around a simple parlour game. The guests take it in turn to say what the thing mentioned by the previous player reminds them of. But when the vicar says that first class railway compartments remind him of murder, everyone is puzzled. Over supper the vicar tells a very peculiar story. But it is the behaviour of the newcomer, the mysterious Mr. Cholmondery, which is most peculiar...

William Wymark Jacobs (1863-1943) was an English author of short stories and novels. His most popular works in the early part of the last century were his humorous tales set around the docks of Wapping and in the taproom of the infamous Cauliflower tavern. Many of his stories were written in a Cockney vernacular and were keenly observant of character. His most famous horror stories are 'The Monkey's Paw', 'His Brother's Keeper' and 'Jerry Bundler', all of which have been included in numerous anthologies.'Jerry Bundler' is a ghost story with a twist. We open in a tavern where travellers are telling ghost stories late one night. One gentleman tells a tale about a ghost haunting the very house where they are all sitting. His story frightens all the company gathered around the fire...and when the old gentleman retires to bed, one of the others proposes to take revenge by pretending to be the ghost. But what happens next is very far from a joke.

It’s been hiding on Earth for millennia…
…but it was my job to hide it from you. If the American people knew what secrets lay beneath their feet, the U.S. government would have no way of controlling the paranoia that would ensue.
In Ancient Beacon, the second installment of The Palmdale Files, former agent Harold Anderson reveals the true story behind the discovery of a mysterious, terribly old, and not-of-this world relic found in a subterranean underwater cavern in New Mexico and the exceptional efforts the U.S. government went through to hide it. Ancient Beacon—also known as Event 348 Gamma—is the second in a series of forgotten and buried events the author once destroyed to protect the peace and security of the United States—events the government would rather hide forever.
The Palmdale Files share highlights from Harold Anderson's U.S. Air Force career, where he worked to defend the nation and the world from paranoid hysteria about unexplained phenomena and threats from above.
