  Two Tales From Nathaniel Hawthorne includes, "The British Matron," a satirical essay, and the short story, "The Hollow of the Three Trees. Hawthorne (1804–1864) was born in Salem, Massachusetts. His ancestors include John Hathorne, the only judge involved in the Salem witch trials who never repented of his actions. Nathaniel later added a "w" to make his name "Hawthorne" in order to hide this relation. The Scarlet Letter, his most famous novel, was published in 1850, followed by a succession of other novels, including The House of the Seven Gables, and various other writings, including the two here.

  William Fryer Harvey (1885-1937) was an English writer of short stories, most notably in the mystery and horror genres.Born into a wealthy Quaker family in Yorkshire, he went to Balliol College, Oxford, and took a degree in medicine at Leeds. Ill health dogged him, however, and he devoted much of his recuperation to writing short stories. "Unwinding" is a strange story based around a simple parlour game. The guests take it in turn to say what the thing mentioned by the previous player reminds them of. But when the vicar says that first class railway compartments remind him of murder, everyone is puzzled. Over supper the vicar tells a very peculiar story. But it is the behaviour of the newcomer, the mysterious Mr. Cholmondery, which is most peculiar...

  William Wymark Jacobs (1863-1943) was an English author of short stories and novels. His most popular works in the early part of the last century were his humorous tales set around the docks of Wapping and in the taproom of the infamous Cauliflower tavern. Many of his stories were written in a Cockney vernacular and were keenly observant of character.His most famous horror stories are 'The Monkey's Paw', 'His Brother's Keeper' and 'Jerry Bundler', all of which have been included in numerous anthologies.'Jerry Bundler' is a ghost story with a twist. We open in a tavern where travellers are telling ghost stories late one night. One gentleman tells a tale about a ghost haunting the very house where they are all sitting. His story frightens all the company gathered around the fire...and when the old gentleman retires to bed, one of the others proposes to take revenge by pretending to be the ghost. But what happens next is very far from a joke.
