  Daniel, a young man and son of the late bailiff, with rather superior ways of a gentleman but no money to back them up becomes involved in a love triangle.  Engaged to Maria, a plain looking girl but with proper manners, Daniel begins stepping out on the sly with a pretty young woman from France called Harriet (really Henriette, but a name too difficult for the villagers to remember).   Maria decides to have it out with him, so she follows him one night.  She catches him coming out of the barn of a neighbour, who also happens to be narrator of the story, with a sack of grain in hand.  Maria lets loose as only a woman scorned might.  The next day Daniel goes missing, and Maria, now repentant for her promise to turn him in to the authorities, sees him walking in the wooded area near the barn, but he doesn't see her.  It transpires she saw him well after he hanged himself in those same woods.

  Valery Yakovlevich Bryusov was born on 13th December 1873 into a merchant's family in Moscow.  
   
  His parents did little to involve themselves with his upbringing and Bryusov seems to have spent long periods immersed in books until studying in two private Moscow gymnasia between 1885 and 1893. 
   
  Whilst a student at Moscow State University he completed translations of the French Symbolists and some of Edgar Allan Poe.  Bryusov, influenced by both the Symbolist and Decadent movements, also began to publish his own poems.  
   
  With the appearance of ‘Tertia Vigilia’ he became acknowledged by other Symbolists as an authority in matters of art and then, in 1904, he became the editor of ‘The Balance’, the influential literary magazine.  
   
  With his poems gradually being seen as outdated he worked harder at prose and two historical novels ‘The Altar of Victory’ (regarding life in Ancient Rome) and ‘The Fiery Angel’ (based in 16th century Germany) brought him much recognition as did a series of science fiction short stories.  Over the decades he also translated authors as diverse as Hugo, Racine, Byron, Verlaine, Goethe and Virgil. 
   
  After the 1917 Revolution Bryusov supported the Bolsheviks and was given a position in the cultural ministry of the new state.  
   
  For his Russian translation of the Armenian folk epic ‘David of Sasun,’ he was designated the People's Poet of Armenia in 1923.   
   
  Valery Yakovlevich Bryusov died on 9th October 1924.  He was 50.

  Mary Rackham was born in Norwich on 14th August 1848 to a merchant family.  Little is known of her early life and her biography only re-appears in September 1871 with marriage to Fairman Joseph Mann, a farmer with 800 acres.   
   
  Mary moved to Shropham, Norfolk and became involved with the workhouse, visiting the sick and other unfortunates of the parish, her observations and experiences a valuable source for her later stories.  
   
  She took up writing, partly to offset the dreary village life of her surroundings, in the 1880s and published her first novel, ‘The Parish of Hilby’ (1883) at her own expense. It was well received by the critics.  
   
  Thus began a career that spanning three decades provided thirty-three novels, hundreds of short stories, and fourteen plays.  Her work was largely focused on rural life in Norfolk and centered on the fictional town of Dulditch, with grim but authentic accounts of poverty and deprivation.  
   
  Her marriage produced one boy and three girls. With her husband's death in 1913, she moved to Sheringham.  
   
  She is regarded as a major contributor to East Anglian literature with particular praise given to her short stories. 
   
  Mary E Mann died on 19th May 1929.  She was 80.  Her grave-marker is a carved open book with the epitaph ‘We bring our years to an end, as if it were a tale that is told’. 
   
  Life in ‘Ben Pitcher's Elly’ is degrading, awful and unvarnished.  The chances of this young girl having a happy life are remote but her story must be heard.
