Beschreibung

Bealby: A Holiday is a comic novel by H. G. Wells. Bealby is the story of the escapade of a thirteen-year-old boy when he rebels against his placement as a steward's-room boy in the great house of an estate named Shonts (his stepfather, Mr. Darling, is a gardener there) and flees—not, however, before thoroughly upsetting a weekend party where the nouveau riche couple renting Shonts is entertaining the Lord Chancellor. Bealby's week-long "holiday" has three phases.

An island off the coast of Maine in the late 1940s
For Liam Dwyer, collegian and would-be poet (or at least really deep intellectual thinker), the Forsythe’s summer-long house party had charming possibilities.  At its best it might turn out as a simple little love story, with himself and the enchanting Laura as principals.  Only, nothing was ever simple with Laura. Nothing. And when he was near her, his own actions and reactions were sometimes a surprise as well:
He could feel Laura’s warmth through her thin dress, pressing against his side as they sat together on the pier.
    “I . . .” he said.
She turned to him, batting her lashes. “Yes, Liam?”
Liam was beginning to sweat along the top of the lip.  He looked into Laura’s blue eyes.  And then it hit him, all of a sudden.  It hit him like a ton of bricks.  It was almost impossible to believe but it was true: Under her clothing, Laura was was wearing absolutely nothing — she was totally nude.   Nude!   He was sitting only a few inches away from a lovely nude girl.
    “Grk,”  he said.

For the British delegation to Vulgaria, no problem is too small to become a crisis in this lively story collection of diplomatic misadventureIn the words of Antrobus, master diplomat in the King’s service, diplomacy was once “a quiet and restful trade carried on in soothing inanity among a hundred shady legations and embassies all over the globe.” What changed? What caused this most noble profession to fall from grace? Women, of course. A diplomatic incident begins brewing as soon as the lovely new French ambassador—or is it ambassadress?—arrives in Vulgaria. One of the British delegation is instantly besotted, and about to begin his pursuit when a rival appears in the form of roguish Italian diplomat Bonzo di Porco. Because these are servants of the most advanced governments in the world, they settle their dispute rationally: with swords. Jealousy, selfishness, swordplay? All are commonplace in Antrobus’s embassy. In these nine juicy tales, the King’s diplomats may seldom be diplomatic, but they always manage to get the job done—with or without bloodshed.

Every few weeks a politician, pundit or soap star causes a media storm by making a gaffe or tweeting a joke that some people do not find funny. Comedy is very hard to get right and yet we think it's important to have a sense of humour and not take yourself too seriously. On the other hand, a sense of humour failure can lead to losing your friends, your Twitter account, your job, your career and, in some cases, your life.James Cary knows about this. He is a sitcom writer who's written jokes about bomb disposal in Afghanistan (Bluestone 42), defended comments about Islam by Ben Elton on Newsnight, been on a panel with radical Muslim cleric Anjem Choudary, sits on the General Synod of the Church of England and somehow managed to co-write episodes of Miranda. An odd mix, but one that makes him very listenable. This entertaining, breezy audiobook explains how comedy works (with jokes and quotes) and gives much-needed insights into the controversy surrounding humour.
