  "At the Mountains of Madness" is a science fiction-horror novella by American author H. P. Lovecraft, written in February/March 1931. The story details the events of a disastrous expedition to Antarctica in September 1930, and what is found there by a group of explorers led by the narrator, Dr. William Dyer of Miskatonic University. Throughout the story, Dyer details a series of previously untold events in the hope of deterring another group of explorers who wish to return to the continent. These events include the discovery of an ancient civilization older than the human race, and realization of Earth's past told through various sculptures and murals.The story was inspired by Lovecraft's interest in Antarctic exploration; the continent was still not fully explored in the 1930s. Lovecraft explicitly draws from Edgar Allan Poe's novel The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket, and he may have used other stories for inspiration. Many story elements, such as the formless "shoggoth", recur in other Lovecraft works. The story has been adapted and used for graphic novels, video games, and musical works.

  The narrator begins with booking passage on a ship to travel from Charleston, S.C. to New York. He soon finds that an artist friend, Mr. Cornelius Wyatt, along with Wyatt's wife and two sisters, will be on the same ship. Our narrator reports that there are three rooms booked for this party, and he wonders what the explanation can be. Of course, it must be a servant! But he sees that the word servant had been on the passenger list, but had been crossed out. We also learn at this point that the narrator knows Mr. Wyatt's sisters, but has never met the wife.When the ship is being loaded for the trip, Mr. Wyatt has with him a large oblong box, which is placed in the artist's own room - not the extra stateroom. The narrator suggests to the reader that this may be a painting in which both men have an interest. Of course, most readers instantly think of a coffin, but this possibility is not mentioned. The box is addressed to Mrs. Wyatt's mother in New York.

  Lance Alexander Sr sat singing along with his car radio as he waited to pick up his son Jr. He was totally distracted by the music. He didn't see the man jump in his car til it was too late. "What are you doing in my car," said Lance noticing him. 
  "Drive!" said the stranger coldly. 
  "I'm waiting for my son hit the road, Jack!" said Lance he hadn't time for this guy. 
  "Forget him and drive," said the stranger pulling a gun on Lance. 
  "You don't want to do this mate!" warned Lance knowingly. 
  "do you think you're a magician?" asked the carjacker. 
  "I'm worse!" said Lance smiling darkly as he stared the car and sped off. Lance was worse than a magician they were heroes he was wanted by the police as a serial killer. 
  His son saw his car speed away. 
  "Okay I'll take myself home then!" said Jr shortly and disappeared into thin air teleporting home. 
  Meanwhile, in the car, the carjacker was terrified thinking he chose the wrong car to carjack. The owner was insane and had some sort of a death wish he was all over the road like a madman and had a devil-may-care attitude with the carjacker. 
  "Let me out of here? I'll not hurt you if you let me go," pleaded the carjacker who was petrified. 
  "You said you wanted me to drive," said Lance in a mock hurt tone as he locked the doors and drove on.
