Beschreibung

So, you’ve learned your scale patterns all over the neck either through the CAGED System, the 3NPS shapes, or some other method, but your solos still don’t sound like music? I know the feeling, and I’ve had plenty of students that hit this wall too. Rather than go down the ‘breaking out of patterns’ route or learning a bunch of licks, I took them into zonal improvisation and saw some fantastic results! I’d like you to try this method too, so I’ve compiled it into one volume you can practice from to finally turn those scales into solos. The objective of this book then is to provide a structured reference to make the transition from playing scales to playing, improvising and creating musical lines when soloing. It’s aimed at the intermediate to advanced guitarist looking to be able to improvise confidently and freely on the instrument in a wide variety of styles. It is also aimed at guitarists that want to move beyond rote pentatonic/blues soloing and incorporate other scales and modes into their playing, as well as building up a vocabulary to solo fluently over chord changes. You’ll note that this is not a book of licks, or a scale theory book, but rather a tool to help you create your own licks and runs while gaining melodic control of 15 of the most useful scales in music; and, if you want to gain a deeper understanding of what scales you can play over what chords, this book will certainly provide more than enough answers to keep you busy in the woodshed.

In this fascinating book Kenneth Baker explores how the Seven Deadly Sins – Pride, Anger, Sloth, Envy, Avarice, Gluttony and Lust – have shaped history from the Greek and Roman Civilisations, through their heyday in the Middle Ages, when sinners really believed they could go to Hell for all eternity, to the secular world of today, where they are still an alluring and destructive force.
Today most sinners are punished in this world not the next:
    • Black Pride and Gay Pride have made tens of millions more understood and more accepted, but the overweening pride of certain leaders – Hubris – has led to wars and devastation: Hitler in Russia; the Japanese at Pearl Harbour; Saddam Hussein in Kuwait; and Blair and Bush in Iraq.
    • Anger, when righteous, can be a virtue, which helped to end the slave trade in the 19th century and to expose child abuse today, but there is still personal anger in domestic violence and Daesh terrorism.
    • Sloth can be an amiable weakness as Tennyson said, 'Ah why should life all labour be', but the rewards go to the energetic.
    • Envy is the mainstay of the global advertising industry encouraging everyone to improve their lives, but it is also a secret vice, a self-destroying morbid appetite.
    • Avarice, has led to better living conditions for many people but also to the Great Depression, the financial collapse of 2008, and to 1,800 billionaires with the combined wealth of US $6.48 trillion.
    • Gluttony is not a sin but a destructive ailment leading to obesity, bottle-noses, bleary eyes, grog-blossoms and breath like a blowlamp.
    • Lust that demands immediate gratification is clearly still a sin, whether Paris' abduction of Helen of Troy, or websites that encourage marital infidelity, or the fate of many politicians, as Kipling said, 'For the sins they do by two and two, they must pay for one by one.'
This book is lavishly illustrated from Medieval manuscripts to Picasso, and Kenneth Baker has drawn on his knowledge of cartoons down the ages to include a few by Gillray, Rowlandson, Bateman, Eric Gill and today Peter Brookes.

A biography of the artist examining his complex relationship with the American West and how he expressed his imagination.Frederic Remington and the West sheds new light on the remarkably complicated and much misunderstood career of Frederic Remington. This study of the complex relationship between Remington and the American West focuses on the artist’s imagination and how it expressed itself. Ben Merchant Vorpahl considers all the dimensions of Remington’s extensive work, from journalism to fiction, sculpture, and painting. He traces the events of Remington’s life and makes extensive use of literary and art criticism and nineteenth-century American social, cultural, and military history in interpreting his work.Vorpahl reveals Remington as a talented, sensitive, and sometimes neurotic American whose work reflects with peculiar force the excitement and distress of the period between the Civil War and the Spanish-American War. Remington was not a “western” artist in the conventional sense; neither was he a historian: he lacked the historian’s breadth of vision and discipline, expressing himself not through analysis but through synthesis. Vorpahl shows that, even while Remington catered to the sometimes maudlin, sometimes jingoistic tastes of his public and his editors—his resourceful imagination was at work devising a far more demanding and worthwhile design—a composite work, executed in prose, pictures, and bronze. This body of work, as the author demonstrates, demands to be regarded as an interrelated whole. Here guilt, shame, and personal failure are honestly articulated, and death itself is confronted as the artist’s chief subject. Because Remington was so prolific a painter, sculptor, illustrator, and writer, and because his subjects, techniques, and media were so apparently diverse, the deeper continuity of his work had not previously been recognized. This study is a major contribution to our understanding of an important American artist. In addition, Vorpahl illuminates the interplay between history, artistic consciousness, and the development of America’s sense of itself during Remington’s lifetime.

Broadway. The Great White Way. In its theatres—one day you’re an understudy, the next a star. Your name in headlines and lights. But Broadway has an underbelly. A troubled side through which to view humanity at its worst: corrupt, dark, venal and violent.

For Detective Danny Clover every time he walked that street another case was always just a few footsteps away. He knows everyone along Broadway—from pan handlers to operatic prima donnas—but he’s still sentimental about the street, forever an ever-changing wonderland of glamour that at any moment is ready to reveal its dark side.

    These are his stories.
