Beschreibung

A rare look inside the Department of Miscellaneous Weapon Development, “a fascinating report on the trials—and some tribulations—of a clandestine world” (Kirkus Reviews).   Previously published under the title The Secret War 1939-1945, this is a firsthand account of the Admiralty’s Department of Miscellaneous Weapon Development, the so-called “Wheezers and Dodgers,” and the many ingenious weapons and devices it invented, improved or perfected.   Gerald Pawle was one of a group of officers with engineering or scientific backgrounds who were charged with the task of winning the struggle for scientific mastery between the Allies and the Germans in what Churchill enthusiastically called “the wizard war.” Their work ranged from early stop-gap weapons like the steam-powered Holman projector, via great success stories like the Hedgehog anti-submarine mortar, to futuristic experiments with rockets, a minefield that could be sown in the sky, and the spectacularly dangerous Great Panjandrum, a giant explosive Catherine-wheel intended to storm enemy beaches.   The development of these and many other extraordinary inventions, their triumphs and disasters, is told with panache and humor by Pawle, and a diverse group of highly imaginative and eccentric figures emerge from the pages.

In this wickedly funny account, Jane Christmas describes her pilgrimage along Spain’s infamous Camino de Santiago de Compostela in celebration of her fiftieth birthday.“This book has made me more determined than ever to do the Camino. That’s what I wanted to get out of it, and that’s exactly what I got.” -Ana, Goodreads“Impulse is intuition on Crack”. If Intuition is the prudent angel who carefully directs your spirit, then Impulse is its mischief-making twin. The “imp in impulse.” And thus begins Jane Christmas’s second book chronicling a walk a very long walk taken to celebrate her 50th birthday and face the challenges of mid-life. From a chance encounter, Jane Christmas is inspired to walk the Camino de Santiago de Compostela, a goal she mentioned in a CBC radio interview. That casual mention inspired others, too, and Christmas finds herself “leader” of 14 women who have all signed on to hike the Camino with her. Before leaving, a psychic warns her of cat-fights, death, and a sexy, fair-haired man. Undaunted, Christmas soldiers on. In vivid, irreverent style, she recounts the joys and struggles she encountered on this challenging pilgrimage – her battles with loneliness, group dynamics, and exhaustion, and more. What the Psychic Told the Pilgrim is one trip neither the author or listener will forget.

This “rollicking newspaperman’s memoir” offers a personal tour of Chicago’s cultural history and makes “a strong case for Second City exceptionalism" (The New York Times).   In 1952 the New Yorker published a three-part essay by A. J. Liebling in which he dubbed Chicago the "Second City." From the skyline to garbage collection, nothing escaped Liebling's withering gaze. Among the outraged responses from Chicago residents was one that Liebling described as the apotheosis of such criticism: a postcard that read, simply, "You were never in Chicago." The dynamic captured in this anecdote has always fascinated Chicago Sun-Times columnist Neil Steinberg. Now, in You Were Never in Chicago, Steinberg weaves his own story as a young outsider making his way into the inner circles of Chicago journalism with a nuanced portrait of the city that would surprise even lifelong residents. Steinberg takes readers through Chicago's vanishing industrial past, exploring the city from the skybridge between the towers of the Wrigley Building, to the vast Deep Tunnel system below the streets. He deftly explains the city's complex web of political favoritism and carefully profiles the characters he meets along the way, from greats of jazz and journalism to small-business owners just getting by. Throughout, Steinberg never loses the curiosity and close observation of an outsider, while thoughtfully considering how this perspective has shaped the city, and what it really means to belong.
