Beschreibung

This is a mystery novel that tells the story of John Lethbridge, a young Englishman. He is a flower artist who found beauty and inspiration in nature. However, he is uninterested in sports, politics, or even love. His only relative, Old Jasper Payn had been a flower enthusiast and had taught Lethbridge all he knew about grooming flowers. Lethbridge left Old Jasper because he accused him of stealing his invention. A surprising turn of events occurs: Old Jasper accuses Lethbridge of theft again when he sees him. The thief who has been prowling Old Jasper's greenhouse is the same thief who has been prowling Lethbridge's greenhouse too. Who is the culprit? Will Old Jasper realise that John Lethbridge is not the thief?

In the world our children will face, neither static definitions of intelligence nor traditional ideas of training will be good enough. To prepare them, parents and educators need to reframe the question of how we educate and come up with an answer that uses different terms than we are accustomed to. If we want our children to thrive in the 21st century, these are the things we will need to prepare them to do:

Blend multiple intelligences in ways that might be described as synthetic or even symphonic.

Be ambitious and focused without being self-obsessed.

Value asynchrony and even seek it out.

Use their own marginality to generate novel perspective and new work.

Exhibit a steadfast resilience in all phases of life.

Measure themselves by what they produce over the course of a lifetime and not by any static notion of capacity or quotient.

In the fractured environment of the 21st century, true success will be unique and unexpected - the result of a creative response to complex, shifting challenges. In light of that, how do we prepare? How do we educate ourselves and our children for life in 2050?

“A thoughtful reconsideration of China’s actual place in the new world order, based on reality rather than fanciful speculation.” —Kirkus Reviews

Can anything prevent China surpassing the United States and becoming the world’s top superpower? While predictions that China’s rise to global supremacy is a near-certainty have resulted in this belief becoming almost conventional wisdom, this book boldly counters such widely held assumptions. Investment strategist Timothy Beardson brings to light the daunting array of challenges that today confront China, as well as the inadequacy of the policy responses. Threats to China come on many fronts, Beardson shows, and by their number and sheer weight these problems will thwart any ambition to become the world’s “Number One power.”

Drawing on extensive research and experience living and working in Asia over the last 35 years, the author spells out China’s situation: an inexorable demographic future of a shrinking labor force, relentless aging, extreme gender disparity, and even a falling population. Also, the nation faces social instability, a devastated environment, a predominantly low-tech economy with inadequate innovation, the absence of an effective welfare safety net, an ossified governance structure, and radical Islam lurking at the borders. Beardson’s nuanced, firsthand look at China acknowledges its historic achievements while tempering predictions of its imminent hegemony with a no-nonsense dose of reality.

For over fifteen years, researchers have described a crisis in our nations' early learning classrooms. Hundreds of children are expelled from childcare and preschool every day; a rate nearly three times that of kindergarten-twelfth grade students. Each child's expulsion is symptomatic of a larger crisis—an overburdened, underfunded, undervalued, and fragmented early education system. In early childhood, expulsion is the result of a series of adult decisions made within constrained contexts and at times blind to downstream consequences: exhausted and underpaid teachers deciding how to expend their limited attention and energy in a chaotic classroom; administrators on razor-thin budgets deciding among hiring additional personnel, providing high-quality training, or investing in adequate classroom resources; fragmented state agencies separately deciding on standards and policies and allocating funds for early intervention and consultation services.By examining these complex causes, No Longer Welcome starts a critical conversation between and across sectors of the early childhood field. Drawing on her research and interviews with teachers, program administrators, parents, and policymakers, Dr. Zinsser presents the listener with a rich description of the myriad of factors contributing to the expulsion crisis.
