Grid beam is a modular, reusable building system that is fast, easy, affordable and virtually goof-proof. Ordinary people, with few skills and even fewer tools (all you need is a wrench!) can tackle projects ranging from furniture and shop benches to more ambitious projects like wind turbines, truck racks, small buildings--even electric vehicles.Grid beam's modular pieces and bolt-together construction make the system fast and straightforward to work with. It has all the advantages of an industrial building system: standard, modular sizes; uniform materials; and interchangeable parts. Projects knock flat and are easy to transport. Since the pieces can be used over and over again, grid beam is easy both on your wallet and on the environment -- the authors have been using some of their components for over 30 years. How to Build with Grid Beam includes hundreds of photos of real projects built over a 60-year period, showing the many uses of grid beam, from shelves for college students to projects involving alternative energy. The versatility of grid beam is inspiring, for beginners, more experienced do-it-yourselfers, and innovators who will develop their own designs. Even school-age children can use grid beam to build simple projects.

“A harried-looking but willing chicken clucks through all the poses, and the net result is an entertaining take on modern yoga practice.” —Yoga Journal

Chickens know a few things about feeling fried. That’s why they’ve been practicing yoga for centuries. As this hilariously illustrated guide to simple yoga poses reveals, we have much to learn from their bird-brained wisdom.

Anyone who feels cooped up or stressed out by the pecking order will feel like a spring chicken in no time thanks to such postures as Chick’s Pose, Snake in the Grass, and Chicken of the Sea. Sections on breathing and stretching are included, and a series of fix-it routines unscramble such problem areas as neck, thighs, and aching feet.

Plus, thoughtful hen koans (why did the chicken cross the road?) and plucky affirmations invite contemplation and inspire budding yoginis to spread their wings. Googly-eyed, combs akimbo, these very funky chickens will enlighten both beginners and the adept, and are sure to make anyone feel chirpy—all for a nice cheep price.

A clever writing self-help parody that skewers writers’ guides while offering amusing, almost-helpful advice.

This parody self-help book for writers is filled with hilariously misguided tips, factual-looking charts, and other advice that knowingly pokes fun at writerly foibles while still cheering would-be authors on. With this book, struggling writers can find suggestions for effective paragraph shapes, tips on where to find inspiration (in your reflection, in the shapes of gum stuck to the ground, in a consultation with your doctor), thoughtful poses for author photos, pull-out procrastination excuses, and much more. How to Success! is filled with enough almost-helpful advice to keep aspiring writers amused, unblocked, and on their way to literary fame.

“How to Success! lightens the pressure many creatives put on themselves to succeed. In effect, it acts as a mirror, showing readers how silly and elusive writing—and writers—can be. Caputo offers practical advice with a comedic twist that will have you laughing out loud.” —Failure Magazine

East by West: a Journey in the Recess is an account of British journalist Henry Lucy's travels across America and on to the Far East in 1883, within two or three decades of the American Civil War, the Indian Mutiny and the end of Japan's isolation from the western world. Lucy was one of the most influential journalists of his day and, as "Toby M.P.", a noted humorist in Punch magazine. His acute powers of observation and light touch make this a most engaging book. This is the second of two volumes and covers his experiences in Japan, India and other parts of south-east Asia, returning home via Aden and the Suez Canal. The first volume included his travels in America and in Japan, including the Atlantic and Pacific crossings by steamer.Note: In Chapter 6, Lucy understandably, to a readership wholly unfamiliar with Japan, includes lengthy statistics about Japan's systems and economy. While the reader of the text can glance at such tables and move swiftly on, this is not possible in an audiobook. Accordingly, I have made two versions of Chapter 6. The first version is completely unabridged. In the alternative file, 6alt, I have excised the longest statistical tables. (Summary by Ruth Golding )
