  Vincent van Gogh is undoubtedly one of the most influential painters of the end of the 19th century. His style was unique in that he used all types of colors in a painting that didn’t show those colors in reality and somehow, he still made it work and look like an actual shape. Different from other impressionistic artists, he developed his still lifes, his portraits, and other beautiful paintings. 
  An entire museum in Amsterdam is dedicated to the works of Vincent van Gogh. And even though his name is famous now, his life was tough, and he faced many fears, worries, and inner demons. Van Gogh was depressed. According to the narrative, he cut off his own ear, and eventually, he committed suicide at the age of 37. The sad reality that this artist’s success wasn’t evident during his life but only after his death, doesn’t change the fact that he is, nevertheless, a grand success. If only he were alive to see it.

  An English émigré who became America's first professional architect, Benjamin Henry Latrobe put his stamp on the built landscape of the new republic. Latrobe contributed to such iconic structures as the south wing of the US Capitol building, the White House, and the Navy Yard. He created some of the early republic's greatest neoclassical interiors, including the Statuary Hall.As a young man, Latrobe was apprenticed to both a leading architect and civil engineer in London, studied the European continent's architectural and engineering monuments, worked on canals, and designed private houses.   In Italy during the late cinquecento, printed music could be found not only in the homes of the wealthy or the music professional, but also in lay homes, courts, and academies. No longer confined to the salons of the elite, music took on the role of social play and recreation. Paul Schleuse examines these new musical forms through a study of the music books of Italian priest, poet, and composer, Orazio Vecchi. Composed for minor patrons and the wider music-buying public, Vecchi's madrigals took as their subjects game-playing, drinking, hunting, battles, and the life of the street. Schleuse looks at how music and game-playing allowed singers and performers to play the roles of exemplary pastoral characters and also comic, foreign, and "rustic" others in ways that defined and ultimately reinforced social norms of the times. His findings reposition Orazio Vecchi as one of the most innovative composers of the late 16th century.
