  This essay of Kant’s on copyright argues that the unlicensed copying of books cannot possibly be permissible, due to the fact that it assumes a consent on the part of the author which it is logically impossible for the author to give. The argument is dependent upon an assumption that the writings be commodified, for the reason why the author is unable to possibly give consent to multiple publishers is due to the author’s will – to communicate with the public – necessitating the profitability of the publisher, for, it is assumed, there is no way to communicate with the public at large without a great expense which can only be borne by a publishing firm. This is, of course, no longer a necessary assumption. Other arguments here are also of interest: this is a foundational document in claims regarding the moral rights of authors, and Kant’s account of the connection between the communicative intent of the author and the rights resultant is of continuing importance (even though it is not often taken into account in contemporary debates, and has only a tenuous relation to contemporary copyright law); the distinction between works and acts in the “Universal Observation” (the third section of the essay) strikes us as odd today, but is worthy of consideration; his admission of the permissibility of derivative works is striking; and, strangely, the first footnote uses as a reductio ad absurdum an idea of liability which underlies what United States law today calls by the name of “contributory infringement.”  (Summary by D.E.   The WWI diary of the Russian Jewish activist and author of The Dybbuk presents “an unforgettable portrait of life, culture, and destruction” (Eugene Avrutin, author of Jews and the Imperial State). By the outbreak of World War I, S. An-sky was a well-known writer, a longtime revolutionary, and an ethnographer who pioneered the collection of Jewish folklore in Russia's Pale of Settlement. In 1915, An-sky took on the assignment of providing aid and relief to Jewish civilians trapped under Russian military occupation in Galicia. As he made his way through the shtetls there, close to the Austrian frontlines, he kept a diary of his encounters and impressions. In his diary, An-sky describes conversations with wounded soldiers in hospitals, fellow Russian and Jewish aid workers, and Jewish civilians living on the Eastern Front. He recorded the brutality and violence against the civilian population, the complexities of interethnic relations, the practices and limitations of philanthropy and medical care, Russification policies, and antisemitism. In the late 1910s, An-sky used his diaries as raw material for a lengthy memoir in Yiddish, published under the title The Destruction of Galicia. Although most of An-sky’s original diaries were lost, two fragments are preserved in the Russian State Archive of Literature and Art. Translated and annotated here by Polly Zavadivker, these fragments convey An-sky's vivid perceptions and enlightening insights.

  This story is based on two young teenage boys who in the summer of 1968, manage to spend an equivalent in today’s money, 210,000 dollars in a few short weeks, after they ran away. This is a true story, which tells how they left Kansas City for Haight and Ashbury in San Francisco, and then fate intervened, as the adventure took on a completely different direction. In the 50’s they are baby boomers and by the time they were teenagers in the 60’s, juvenile delinquents. However, not violent; just knew how to manipulate the system.  Therefore, it made sense that they would join the thousands of others in 1968 and dropout.  However, they dropped in…not out…into high dollar resorts and luxury hotels. Follow their activities as they travel around the country and Mexico, living the life.      It also involves two young female runaways. They with the two boys pull off one the most amazing trips ever taken. The Military, the FBI, several states, and then Mexican officials are looking for them. However, somehow they elude them all.  They were finally caught in Chicago Illinois at the end of August 1968, during the time of the controversial Democratic Convention that year. When they were caught, investigators found a plastic bag the girls had kept the hotel keys in as souvenirs. There were 32 different hotel keys and airline tickets for 31 different flights, most first class. Enjoy, Samuel David. Author
