Beschreibung

A young man’s rebellion lands him in a Mexican prison, where theater becomes a lifeline in this memoir of angst, crime, friendship and redemption.   Richard Jewkes was in his senior year as a University of Utah theater student when he became disenchanted with his strict Mormon upbringing. Over Christmas break, he and a college friend took off for Mexico seeking adventure. If the adventure hadn’t included smuggling drugs, it might have just been another college road trip. But after a disastrous encounter with a drug cartel, the two young men ended up arrested by Mexican Federales while trying to make it to the US border.   When Jewkes and his friend are tossed into a Mexican prison, they anticipate torture, assault, and even death. After a fight with a notorious killer and struggles with tormenting guards, they make a disastrous escape attempt. But ultimately, Jewkes finds his path to survival when he starts a theatre group with a rag-tag bunch of fellow convicts.

THRESHOLD OF FAITH is the story of Vern Anderson’s lifelong journey of discovery and blessing. From his family’s farm in Western Minnesota where he was rooted in the hardworking values of his immigrant Scandinavian heritage, Vern’s journey took him to the high-stakes world of American business. Along the way, Vern learned he could not confine God to traditional Sunday-morning religion. As Vern poured himself into the company he helped start, he came to see God at work daily. His faith grew even as he wrestled with doubts, questions, and uncertainties. Those day-to-day struggles, however, prepared Vern to step over the threshold of faith. This is also a story of a company launched by faith. From its humble beginnings in a small shop in a small town, Douglas Machine grew to employ more than 700 who design and build one-of-a-kind packaging machines, now found in over 30 countries. Along with his cousin, Bud Thoen, and his brother, Paul, Vern watched God regularly guide their decisions, impact people — and even fix troublesome machines! Impossibilities became possible as they invited God into their workplace. Threshold of Faith tells of a God who is “always there” — at home, at school, and even at work. Let this book entertain and inspire you with the faith to step over the threshold and into God’s best for you.

The Spanx Story chronicles Sara’s journey from long nights researching patent and trademark law, to years of cold shoulders she received from the titans of the pantyhose industry, to the cold call that led to the shelves of Nieman Marcus. It was a long road of incredible hard work and determination that led Spanx to become the iconic brand it is today.

Steve Jobs visited the author in the 1970s to find out what it was like to be an entrepreneur. It was still a pre-tech age with computer companies being like other corporations of the era, complete with suits and ties. Steve was the new wave; he sought out the author because his company was different than the old line companies but not what Steve imagined. The conversations were scintillating and imaginative. The author acts the role of Boswell with Dr. Johnson, Steve Jobs. The author also lists the 14 rules of Steve Jobs. As the author says, this is a Sherwood Anderson, Winesburg, Ohio moment, never to be repeated.

“A psychologically nuanced, tough-minded portrait” of the New York filmmaker and his relationships with Mia Farrow and Soon-Yi Previn (Publishers Weekly). Writer, director, actor, humorist. Woody Allen stands as one of our era’s most celebrated artists. Starting in the 1950s, Allen began crafting a larger‑than‑life neurotic persona that has since entertained and enlightened millions. In his films, widely thought to be autobiographical explorations of his own comic fears and fixations, Allen carefully controlled the public’s view of him as a lovable scamp. But that all came crashing down the day Mia Farrow found a Polaroid on her mantle. What followed was a flurry of sensational headlines and legal battles. His relationship with Soon‑Yi Previn, thirty-four years his junior and the step‑daughter of his longtime girlfriend, caused shockwaves in the public’s perception of the director, yet few biographers and journalists have explored what happened and why. In this, the first deep investigation of Allen’s life and the events surrounding his split with Farrow, biographer Marion Meade tracks down dozens of friends, actors, neighbors, and film historians. They open up with insights and details rare in the world of wealth and celebrity. What results is a fascinating portrait of a flawed genius, as adept at constructing his own image as he is at crafting films. Rereleased and updated, this is an unauthorized biography that neither Woody Allen’s fans nor his detractors will be able to put down. The revised and updated edition was reviewed in the Wall Street Journal in 2013 by Carl Rollyson, in a roundup of the five best Hollywood biographies.
