Beschreibung

A teenage girl and her wicked stepmother battle to the death in this pulp fiction classic from the legendary author of the Mike Shayne Mysteries.   Ever since her father wrote to say he had married a woman named Florence, April Haddon has nursed a bitter hatred for her stepmother. Now, years later, when they finally meet, she is not disappointed.   With her father dead, April is back in Midhampton to claim her inheritance. Only Florence stands in her way. As April’s legal guardian, Florence seems to relish the control she has over her stepdaughter. But April has her own ways of taking control. She’d kill Florence if she thought she could get away with it—she even says so in her diary. And now it seems she’ll get the chance.   Over the next eleven days, April and Florence engage in a vicious battle of wills that leads inexorably to tragedy. But is Florence truly an evil stepmother—or is April truly capable of carrying out her darkest fantasies?   First published in 1949, Before I Wake was hailed by the Los Angeles Daily News as “an emotional experience” that “hasn’t been matched in years” with “an incredibly terrifying finish that will . . . knock you for a loop.”  Praise for Brett Halliday’s Mike Shayne Mysteries  “[Mike Shayne is] one of the best of the tough sleuths.” —The New York Times  “Unlike anything else in the genre.” —L. J. As friends, the boisterous and brash American Beryl couldn't be less alike than the prim and proper British Edwina. But as sleuths in an England recovering from the Great War, they're the perfect match.
The year is 1920: Flying in the face of convention, legendary American adventuress Beryl Helliwell never fails to surprise and shock. The last thing her adoring public would expect is that she craves some peace and quiet. The humdrum hamlet of Walmsley Parva in the English countryside seems just the ticket. And, honestly, until America comes to its senses and repeals Prohibition, Beryl has no intention of returning stateside and subjecting herself to bathtub gin.
For over three decades, Edwina Davenport has lived comfortably in Walmsley Parva, but the post-World War I bust has left her in dire financial straits and forced her to advertise for a lodger. When her long-lost school chum Beryl arrives on her doorstep - actually crashes into it in her red motorcar - Edwina welcomes her old friend as her new roommate.
But her idyllic hometown has a hidden sinister side, and when the two friends are drawn in, they decide to set up shop as private inquiry agents, helping Edwina to make ends meet and satisfying Beryl's thirst for adventure. Now this odd couple will need to put their heads together to catch a killer - before this sleepy English village becomes their final resting place.

But everything points to suicide and the police close the case. Anna, however, believes Elly’s fears for Toby, her young nephew, missing since being snatched from St Stephen’s church six months ago, fail to explain the true reason behind Elly’s distress. Through a series of hidden messages Elly left behind, Anna embarks on a dangerous crusade to track down Toby and find Elly’s killer. But nothing is as it seems and Anna opens a can of worms that throws into question even her own husband’s suicide - before the threads of the mystery converge in an astonishing conclusion.

There were three names written down, but the fourth was unknown. A name so painful that it had been scored through. A black scar where once the truth had been spelled out. The Reverend’s role had been clear, but for what he had done, he would have to suffer…

When a vicar is reported missing just days before Christmas and two churches are burned to the ground, the police know there is only one person that can help them solve the case: Head of the Ritualistic Behavioural Crime unit, Dr Harrison Lane.

An expert on ritualistic and religious crime profiling, Harrison uses tracking skills taught to him by his Native American stepfather to follow the trail of clergymen’s bodies displayed in sinister effigies that warp scenes from the New Testament.

Amidst the bitter cold, Harrison pursues a killer who is seeking long-awaited vengeance against members of the church for a sin that has festered for decades. With a lead investigator who is less than co-operative and suspicion hurriedly thrown upon vulnerable members of the community, Harrison can’t shake the feeling that something deeper and darker, linked to his own family’s mysterious past, is hiding below the surface of this investigation.

Can Harrison solve these murders before the killer claims their next victim? And does that victim even deserve to be saved?

An addictive crime thriller, perfect for fans of Rachel McLean, Rachel Abbott and Angela Marsons.

This is the fourth and final novel by Fanny Burney, the author of Evelina, Cecilia, and Camilla. "Who is "Miss Ellis?" Why did she board a ship from France to England at the beginning of the French revolution? Anyway, the loss of her purse made this strange "wanderer" dependent upon the charity of some good people and, of course, bad ones. But she always comforts herself by reminding herself that it's better than "what might have been..." This is not only a mystery, not at all. It's also a romance which reminds readers of novels by Jane Austen. Published in 1814, the same year as Mansfield Park, it shares some themes with it. It is also very modern, speaking freely of independent women (like Elinor), weak male characters, and unrequited love. Yes, a love triangle is lurking behind the scenes, and, in this case, it is not clear if the happy ending is suitable. At the time when it was published, critics did not like this political novel, and said that the difficulties which "Ellis" faced while trying to support herself were clearly fictional. However, don't let this deter you. It's a wonderful and mature novel, ahead of it's time by about 100 years. Happy reading! A sudden interest in the occult swept through the English village of Plummergen.
Ouija boards were replacing the best china in many a cozy cottage. It might be quite the thing for maiden ladies and persnickity aunts, but it wasn’t Miss Seeton’s cup of tea . . . until Scotland Yard requested she go undercover to investigate sinister shenanigans in the Kentish countryside.
A flim-flam was afoot in the local witches' coven - and magic could be a prelude to murder most foul.
Serene amidst every kind of skullduggery, retired art teacher Miss Seeton steps in where Scotland Yard stumbles. Armed with nothing more than her sketchpad and umbrella, she is at every turn the most lovable and unlikely master of detection. What people are saying about Miss Seeton:
“Miss Seeton is a hoot! I was torn between laughter and eye rolling with each page turn. The characters are loveable and thoroughly British. This is a perfect specimen of classic British mystery.“
“What a joy Miss Seeton is. Why did I wait so long to read them? Splashy characters, lovely setting, and just plain funny.”
“I've become a Miss Ess addict. Great characters that get better with each book. A must for anyone who loves a good British cozy with a twist, and surprising revelations of what a good brollie can do in a pinch.”
“What a great series. This is one of the best in English light reading mysteries.”
“Miss Seeton is a delightful sendup of the amateur sleuth. If your doctor has prescribed laughter as the best medicine, run and buy the entire series as fast as you can.” Editorial reviews:
“A most beguiling protagonist!” New York Times
“Miss Seeton gets into wild drama with fine touches of farce . . . This is a lovely mixture of the funny and the exciting.” San Francisco Chronicle
“This is not so much black comedy as black-currant comedy . . . You can’t stop reading. Or laughing.” The Sun
“Depth of description and lively characters bring this English village to life.” Publishers Weekly
“Fun to be had with a full cast of endearingly zany villagers . . . and the ever gently intuitive Miss Seeton.” Kirkus Reviews
“Miss Seeton is the most delightfully satisfactory character since Miss Marple.” Ogden Nash
