  In the red corner: the muck, grit and harsh truths of life. In the blue corner: the beauty of the natural world and the vivid variety provided by imagination. Cathy Bryant is dancing about somewhere in between.
  
  To continue the boxing ring metaphor to a silly (but possibly accurate) degree, the other two corners are culture and experience, the canvas is time and I'm on the ropes of conscience.
  
  For Cathy is stuck as a misfit. Born in the south, she lives in the north. from a middle class home, she is working class by poverty and experience. She knows what it's like to be homeless, and what it's like to pick a dirty penny off the pavement and be happy to have it, and she also know the correct way to address a duchess, and whether to put the milk in first. She doesn't fit in anywhere - except at poetry events, where you can't know whether the person next to you is a convicted felon, a linguistics professor, or both.

  Under the order of King Pelias, Jason embarks on a perilous journey to steal the Golden Fleece from the Land of Colchis. Far from heroic, Jason is the typical everyman. He is given to intense bouts of nervousness and anxiety and is saved on more than one occasion by the sorceress Medea, Jason's love interest, and his band of heroes: Castor and Pollux, Heracles, the musician Orpheus, and the flying brothers Zetes and Calais.  
  They encounter clashing rocks at the Bosphorus; an all-female parliament at Lemnos, where the women have slaughtered the men; harpies who plague the prophet Phineas; King Amycus, a champion boxer; an army of men who spring from the ground; and, of course, the never-sleeping dragon who guards the Golden Fleece.  
  Often compared with Homer's Iliad and Odyssey, Jason and the Argonauts is the only surviving poem from the Hellenistic period and was hugely influential on later literature, especially the Roman poetry of Virgil and Ovid.

  Poetry. A form of words that seems so elegantly simple in one verse and so cleverly complex in another.  Each poet has a particular style, an individual and unique way with words and yet each of us seems to recognise the path and destination of where the verses lead, even if sometimes the full comprehension may be a little beyond us. 
   
  Through the centuries every culture has produced verse to symbolize and to describe everything from everyday life, natural wonders, the human condition and even in its more hubristic moments, the crushing triumph of an enemy. 
   
  In the volumes of this series we take a look through the prism of individual regions of the United States through the centuries and decades. 
   
  The United States may be many things: the world’s policeman, a bully, a shameless purveyor of mass market culture but it also, in its better moments, a standard bearer for truth, transparency, equality and the more positive qualities of democracy. 
   
  Little wonder that’s its poets are rightly acknowledged as wonders of their art.  Leading lights in the fight against slavery and for equality, even if the rest of the Nation is finding it problematic to catch up.   
   
  In this volume we have collected verse from poets born in the prosaically named Mid-Atlantic region.  Within its boundaries, which have never been authoritatively agreed, are New York, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, and Virginia.  Therefore it is easy to wax lyrical on what, and how, our esteemed poets including Walt Whitman, Frances W Harper, Edith Wharton, Willa Cather, William Carlos Williams and Herman Melville have penned in their gloried verse on the societies and lands before and around them.
