Beschreibung

“The Great God Pan, The White People, and Other Stories” is a collection of nineteen short stories and novellas by Arthur Machen. The Welsh author, journalist, actor, and mystic, was well-known for his early influential horror and supernatural fantasy tales published in the late 19th and early 20th century. Included in this collection are some of his most enduring and famous works, such as the novella “The Great God Pan”, first published in 1890. Considered one of the best horror stories in English literature, the tale of Helen Vaughn and the mystery and violence that surrounded her life was met with much controversy and acclaim when it first appeared for its taboo subject matter and suggestive imagery. Also included are such classics as “The Bowmen”, his 1914 tale of ghosts helping British soldiers at the Battle of Mons that was widely believed by many at the time to be a true story of otherworldly intervention. Machen’s imaginative and spell-binding tales continue to entertain and inspire generations of readers and writers who enjoy well-crafted tales of suspense and supernatural fantasy. This edition includes a biographical afterword.

Odie Hawkins utilizes the same thrust, power, and creativity that made Ghetto Sketches his first bestseller. He has moved the focus from Chicago to Los Angeles; and once again, he has populated his stories with unforgettable characters—the telephone freak, the tenants of Mrs. Solomon’s apartment building, and a few surrealistic types.   The Secret Music we all hear is echoed within these stories . . .

'The Man Who Was Through With the World' picks up the same themes as in Lawrence's short story 'The Man Who Loved Islands'. He asks if we can ever withdraw from the world, no matter how much it disgusts us. The ironic part of this fragment is that the hermit vainly seeks to think holy thoughts while all around him is the natural world which could provide his life with meaning. The fragment is unfinished leaving the reader to wonder if the hero would return to the world, would the world come to him or would nature take its course and let him die in his hut.

David Copperfield is the story of a young man's adventures on his journey from an unhappy and impoverished childhood to the discovery of his vocation as a successful novelist. Among the gloriously vivid cast of characters he encounters are his tyrannical stepfather, Mr. Murdstone; his formidable aunt, Betsey Trotwood; the eternally humble yet treacherous Uriah Heep; frivolous, enchanting Dora; and the magnificently impecunious Micawber, one of literature's great comic creations. In David Copperfield—the novel he described as his "favorite child"—Dickens drew revealingly on his own experiences to create one of his most exuberant and enduringly popular works, filled with tragedy and comedy in equal measure

"The Sign of the Four" (1890), also called "The Sign of Four," is the second novel featuring Sherlock Holmes written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Doyle wrote four novels and 56 stories starring the fictional detective. The story is set in 1888.

"The Sign of the Four" has a complex plot involving service in East India Company, India, the Indian Rebellion of 1857, a stolen treasure, and a secret pact among four convicts ("the Four" of the title) and two corrupt prison guards. It presents the detective's drug habit and humanizes him in a way that had not been done in the preceding novel, "A Study in Scarlet" (1887). It also introduces Doctor Watson's future wife, Mary Morstan.
