The rest of Baum's tale is filled with hairbreadth escapes, wild puns, and mystifying magic.

  The Fasti is a Latin poem in six books, written by Ovid and believed to have been published in 8 AD. The Fasti is  organized according to the Roman calendar and explains the origins of Roman holidays and associated customs, often through the mouths of deities and with multiple aetiologies. The poem was left unfinished when the poet was exiled to Tomis, so only the first six months of the year appear in the poem. (Summary by Leni)

If during that hour, he finds three people who would wish him alive again, then he can indeed come back to life. The hour is spent learning some hard truths, uncovering false friends and finding surprising support where he least expects it. The ending includes a bitter twist.

  Our protagonist, Golyadkin Senior, is persecuted by his double, Golyadkin Junior, who resembles him closely in almost every detail. The latter abuses the former with mounting scorn and brutality as the tale proceeds toward its frightening denouement.
