Beschreibung

What happens when a small town where everyone knows each other finds itself in the middle of a mystery?

A wave of unexplainable robberies rolls over the town's favourite establishments and Mel Haden, a full-time bakery owner and now part-time amateur sleuth, expects little to no help from the town's police force.

What Mel doesn't expect is to meet Jess Weldon, a fresh face among those who grew up and grew old together. The story unfolds when her arrival, together with the robberies, seems to bring the best - and the worst - out of everyone.

As fortune would have it, you have just stumbled across an off-the-leash, unbridled small compendium of outrageous stories called “Instant Ancestors.” Thanks to the lop-sided imagination of author Russell Shuler, you’ll meet a cast of characters, complete with a fabulous portrait (and subtle story clues contained therein), caught in every conceivable slant of shenanigan and predicament.Stick your toe in, and you’ll experience “the long hard stare” of Cletus McHaggis as he faces off with the “devastating beauty” of twins Ismerelda and Desdomena, circling one another in an ancient game of “dupe and roll.” You’ll follow the conjurings of Gloriah Jellylooloo, the “Memory Catalyst,” who brings cinema to events thought to be long buried and those yet to occur. Observe Smabdolem Ik as he encounters a troop of dwarf strippers with a dark side. And try to stay abreast with the show-stopping ideas of exotic fan dancer Izzy Ibrahim and her creative partner (and son) Shelley. All this flabbergastery, and more, is now available between the covers of “Instant Ancestors.”The Genesis of Instant AncestorsIt’s been said many times that you can pick your nose, but you can’t pick your relatives. I believed that to be true until, not long ago, I came across a shoe box crammed with family portraits taken roughly a hundred years ago in a favorite antique store. The stall proprietor included an index card with the scribbled broadside: “Instant Ancestors!” It went on to say that with these pictures, you could conjure up a long-lost relative from God knows where famous for such and such, and no one would be wiser. To be truthful, the idea appealed to my lop-sided, passionate sense of humor, so I bought the box of photographs and began imagining the personal chronicles of these precious folks who had been relegated to the dustbin of history.

I wondered what crime a professional killer could commit that his closest friends would find unforgivable.
It is the mid 1980’s and Barbara Kemp shatters another glass ceiling as she becomes the US babysitter for Charlemagne, the premier freelance specialist team used by western governments for black operations conducted without fingerprints. She arrives in-country for her first assignment in support of an allied government.
An American officer is being used as bait to lure a deep cover IRA explosives expert into the light where Charlemagne will eliminate him — if they do not annihilate each other first. Barbara must deal with a mystifying lunacy in the dangerous men around her while she struggles to find a way to save the American bait, the operation, and the team itself.
Lion Tamer is the fourth book in K.A. Bachus’s unflinching Charlemagne Files series. Will this promotion be the end of Barbara’s career? Or the end of her life?

An engineer, Victor Hatherley, attends Dr Watson's surgery after his thumb is chopped off, and recounts his tale to Watson and Holmes. Hatherley had been hired for 50 guineas to repair a machine he was told compressed Fuller's earth into bricks. Hatherley was told to keep the job confidential, and was transported to the job in a carriage with frosted glass, to keep the location secret. He was shown the press, but on closer inspection discovered a "crust of metallic deposit" on the press, and he suspected it was not being used for compressing earth. He confronted his employer, who attacked him, and during his escape his thumb is chopped off. Holmes deduces that the press is being used to produce counterfeit coins, and works out its location. However, when they arrive, the house is on fire, and the criminals have escaped.
