Reconstruction of the most famous cases of vampirism: Arnaut Paul and Peter Blagojevich.Confronted by a new breakout of a plague epidemic on the territory of the Ottoman Empire, the Habsburg monarchy had to raise almost 1900 km long sanitary cordon on the onset of the 18th century. It spread along the southern and eastern border of the monarchy and Transylvania and represented the longest permanent land cordon in European history. In the absence of a proper remedy, a forty day isolation of the infected was imposed. The cordon consisted of indigenous military troops and Habsburg medical military personnel. However, an even worse pestilence than the plague emanated from the enemy Ottomans. A pandemic of vampires which jolted the southern border of the monarchy and pierced into its interior. How seriously they took this problem can be seen by the fact that the local authorities were obliged directly to inform the Court War Council in Vienna and their Court Sanitary Committee. The official name for the spread of vampirism was “magia posthuma”, in accordance with the homonymous study by Karl Ferdinand von Schertz from 1706.
