An eye-opening look at how the current media landscape has incentivized us to see our fellow citizens as characters in an ongoing entertainment—and how we can fight back, from the popular and award-winning staff writer for The Atlantic.
Whether it’s our reality-television-star President or our expertly curated Instagram feeds, the line between fact and fiction—between what’s real and what’s fabricated for entertainment—has never been more blurred. Screen People explores what happens when we cede our reality to spectacle. Megan Garber explains how today’s internet-inflected culture conditions us to see one another not as people but as characters in an ongoing show, and how some of our most chronic and harmful social conditions—loneliness, depression, mistrust, misinformation, cynicism—stem from our demand for diversion.
In ten chapters, each themed around an element of entertainment—from “The Producers,” who edit our reality, to “The Extras,” the strangers we turn into objects of our amusement, to “the Haters,” the worshipful Qanon-types who expect the prophecies of their anonymous leader to play out on live television—Garber argues that this comedy of our daily lives is quickly becoming tragedy. And we can’t understand our politics without first understanding our culture.
Like The Anxious Generation but about our media diet, Screen People shows why Megan Garber is one of the most respected and widely-read journalists of our day. It is an urgent, page-turning, and dazzling look at how we entertained ourselves into our current predicament, and how we might find our way out of the maze of misinformation and chaos.

Perhaps the most intriguing aspect of ancient Egyptian civilization was its inception from the ground up, as the Egyptians themselves had no prior civilization which they could use as a template. In fact, Egypt itself became a template for the civilizations that followed. The Greeks and the Romans were so impressed with Egyptian culture that they often attributed many aspects of their own culture to the Egyptians. With that said, some minor elements of ancient Egyptian culture were, indeed, passed on to later civilizations. Egyptian statuary appears to have had an initial influence on the Greek version, and the ancient Egyptian language continued long after the pharaonic period in the form of the Coptic language.
Despite the strides made in understanding Egyptian history, there are obvious difficulties in assessing what ancient societies ate and drank, even as advances in technology continue to open up new methods of analysis for food deposits in human remains and archaeological sites. In general, the majority of what ancient individuals ate did not last long, and in the case of ancient Egypt, there is an even greater additional time factor. Ancient Egyptian civilization lasted over 3,000 years, a time period that if applied to Europe encompasses the time before Rome was even founded right up to the present day. Within such a lengthy period a great deal happens in any society, and in Egypt, numerous dynasties came and went, with constant invasions both by Egyptians into nearby regions and back into Egypt by neighboring civilizations. All of these different groups presumably had their own preferences for food and drink. Population migrations, especially the ones led by the Sea Peoples into the region around 1250 BCE, combined with other factors such as climate to impact the food and drink consumed by Egyptians.

The true crime story of a 1960 murder that rocked a tranquil Michigan vacation spot and the search for justice that followed.

When widow Frances Lacey was murdered in July 1960 on Mackinac Island, only a few meager clues were found by police, and the case soon turned cold. But more than sixty years later, will those same clues finally solve the mystery?

On July 24, 1960, the quaint charm and serenity of Mackinac, nestled between Michigan’s Upper and Lower Peninsulas, was shattered by Lacey’s brutal death. Despite a massive manhunt and thousands of pages of police reports, her killer was never caught.

Now, in Grim Paradise, true crime author Rod Sadler (Killing Women) delves into the secrets of one of Michigan's most perplexing murder cases. Offering an in-depth and suspenseful account of the long-standing mystery, he poses the question: Could advancements in DNA technology lead to the identity of the Mackinac Island murderer as it did in the case of the Golden State Killer?
