Sinossi

Brain Resilience explores how we can actively promote brain health and resilience as we age. Challenging the notion that cognitive decline is inevitable, the book highlights the brain's remarkable capacity for adaptation through neuroplasticity and cognitive reserve.

Did you know that learning new skills, practicing mindfulness, and engaging in mentally stimulating activities can significantly impact cognitive function? The book integrates insights from psychology, neuroscience, and health & fitness to offer a holistic understanding of brain aging. It underscores the importance of personalized strategies, empowering readers to tailor interventions to their individual needs. For example, stress management techniques can impact brain physiology, while physical exercise complements cognitive interventions.

Beginning with fundamental concepts, Brain Resilience progresses through the science of learning, the benefits of meditation, and the role of problem-solving in maintaining mental sharpness. Ultimately, it provides practical guidelines for creating a personalized brain-health program, supported by scientific evidence and real-world applications.

Behind every act of domestic terrorism there is someone's child whose life took a radical turn for reasons that often remain mysterious. Camilla Hall is a case in point: a pastor's daughter from small-town Minnesota who eventually joined the ranks of radicals in the notorious Symbionese Liberation Army before dying in a shootout with Los Angeles Police in May 1974. How could a "good girl" become one of the most wanted domestic terrorists in the United States? Rachael Hanel tells her story here, revealing both the deep humanity and the extraordinary circumstances of Camilla Hall's life.

Her path from her Minnesota home to her final, radical SLA family featured years as an artist and activist—in welfare offices, political campaigns, union organizing, culminating in a love affair that would be her introduction to the SLA. Through research and interviews, Hanel pieces together Camilla's transformation.

Camilla Hall's story is of interest for what it reveals about the forces of radicalization. But as Hanel ventures ever further into Camilla's past, her book becomes an intriguing, disturbing, and ultimately deeply moving journey into the dark side of America's promise.

    Contains mature themes.

Why Did That Happen? - Aristotle...

Why Did That Happen? Aristotle Has Four Answers and None of Them Are Helpful is your brutally sarcastic, surprisingly educational crash course in Aristotelian philosophy—specifically his theory of causality, aka why things happen according to a man who thought everything, including acorns and chairs, had a spiritual destiny.
In this delightfully vicious breakdown of Aristotle’s metaphysics, Sophia Blackwell (author of Kant You Not) drags you through the Four Causes—material, formal, efficient, and final—with all the reverence of a philosopher who’s had enough. Whether it’s trees yearning to be trees, tables having identity crises, or humans trying to find meaning while simultaneously sabotaging themselves, this book dissects Aristotle’s ancient framework with modern sarcasm and a side of existential dread.
    Inside, you’ll get:
A roast of Aristotle’s greatest hits: substance, essence, and metaphysical overkill
Why your coffee mug apparently has purpose and moral character
How causality shows up in nature, ethics, AI, and your inability to commit
A final cause that dares to ask if you have one (spoiler: Aristotle thinks you should)
And a walk through the philosophical ruins of teleology, where purpose and pretension meet
Perfect for philosophy students, intellectual masochists, or anyone who’s ever asked “Why did that happen?” and gotten four wildly overcomplicated answers in response.
This is not your professor’s Aristotle. This is Aristotle, but make it bearable

    Socially Psyched: A Short Book...

This is a collection of what I feel are some of the most important social/cognitive psychology experiments, studies, demonstrations, biases, and systematic reviews, presented in an entertaining way while adhering to academic standards.

I have always been fascinated by how our behaviors, cognition (thoughts), and affect (how we feel) are greatly dependent upon our social environment and our imperfect brains. I find it fascinating--perhaps because I am an American who was raised in the typical American cultural environment where I learned that what we consider "the self" consists of some magic "soul" that defines who we are—our behaviors (including choices and decisions), our cognition (including thoughts and beliefs), and our feelings. This could not be further from the truth. "We" are a result of an often incomprehensible interaction between biology and environment where some traits are more greatly influenced by social factors than others. Who we are is a result of social forces—the influence of other people and the human-created systems in which we operate. We can ignore this fact, maintain an illusion of control, or face reality and learn how to navigate this world and come out on top—personally, professionally, and financially. I choose the latter.

My name is Bo Bennett, and I hold a PhD in social psychology with a passion for this subject. While this book is not about me, my interpretations and commentary do make up most of the sections of each entry based on the content written by the original authors of the research or other sources—each of which will be cited when used.
    Enjoy this short book!
