Sinossi

"Men Enjoy Fiber" explores the pivotal, yet often overlooked, shift in understanding the importance of dietary fiber, particularly from beans, for men's health and digestive well-being around the 1960s. It examines how emerging health data during this era gradually revealed fiber's crucial role, influencing dietary habits and cultural attitudes. The book uniquely focuses on this turning point, dissecting initial research and sociological factors that either promoted or hindered the acceptance of fiber-rich diets. For example, early studies began to pinpoint fiber's role in preventing common digestive ailments, but these findings were not immediately embraced by the general public.

The book adopts a fact-based approach, drawing from published research, dietary surveys, and sociological trends to present a balanced view. It begins by establishing the landscape of nutritional science before the 1960s, then delves into pivotal research highlighting the benefits of fiber and beans for digestion. Finally, it culminates with an analysis of the cultural reception of this information, specifically amongst men, and their evolving understanding of health and fitness.

This historical perspective offers valuable insights into how scientific findings translate into everyday life, helping readers understand our evolving relationship with food.

Leonard Woolley, an archaeologist from Britain, returned to Iraq in 1922, almost 4,000 years after the nuclear ancient catastrophe, to uncover ancient Mesopotamia. An imposing ziggurat standing out in the desert plain drew him to the nearby site of Tell el-Muqayyar, where he began excavating. As old walls, artifacts, and inscriptions were unearthed, he realized he was digging up ancient Ur-Ur of the Chaldees.
Twelve years of his work were conducted through a joint expedition between the British Museum in London and the University of Pennsylvania Museum in Philadelphia. For those institutions, Sir Leonard Woolley found some of the most dramatic objects and artifacts in Ur. However, what he discovered may well surpass anything ever exhibited before.
In the course of removing layers of soil deposited by desert sands, the elements, and time from the ruins, the ancient city began to take shape-here were the walls, there were the harbors and canals, the residential quarters, the palace, and the Tummal, the elevated sacred area. Woolley's discovery of a cemetery dated thousands of years ago included unique 'royal' tombs discovered by digging at its edge is the find of the century.

An argument that love requires the courage to accept self-negation for the sake of discovering the Other.

Byung-Chul Han is one of the most widely read philosophers in Europe today, a member of the new generation of German thinkers that includes Markus Gabriel and Armen Avanessian. In The Agony of Eros, a bestseller in Germany, Han considers the threat to love and desire in today's society. For Han, love requires the courage to accept self-negation for the sake of discovering the Other. In a world of fetishized individualism and technologically mediated social interaction, it is the Other that is eradicated, not the self. In today's increasingly narcissistic society, we have come to look for love and desire within the “inferno of the same.”

Han offers a survey of the threats to Eros, drawing on a wide range of sources—Lars von Trier's film Melancholia, Wagner's Tristan und Isolde, Fifty Shades of Grey, Michel Foucault (providing a scathing critique of Foucault's valorization of power), Martin Buber, Hegel, Baudrillard, Flaubert, Barthes, Plato, and others. Han considers the “pornographication” of society, and shows how pornography profanes eros; addresses capitalism's leveling of essential differences; and discusses the politics of eros in today's “burnout society.” To be dead to love, Han argues, is to be dead to thought itself.

Concise in its expression but unsparing in its insight, The Agony of Eros is an important and provocative entry in Han's ongoing analysis of contemporary society.

This remarkable essay, an intellectual experience of the first order, affords one of the best ways to gain full awareness of and join in one of the most pressing struggles of the day: the defense, that is to say—as Rimbaud desired it—the “reinvention” of love.

Capitalism is one of the most influential and widely practiced economic systems in the world today. Rooted in the principles of private ownership and free enterprise, it has shaped modern societies and economies for centuries. At its core, capitalism is an economic system where individuals and businesses own and operate the means of production and distribution of goods and services. This ownership is driven by the pursuit of profit, incentivizing innovation, efficiency, and productivity.
The origins of capitalism can be traced back to the decline of feudalism in Europe during the late Middle Ages. As trade expanded and markets grew, the need for a more flexible and dynamic economic structure became apparent. The Industrial Revolution of the 18th and 19th centuries played a pivotal role in solidifying capitalism as the dominant economic system, introducing mass production and new technologies that revolutionized industries.
The free market is the cornerstone of capitalism. It operates on the principle of supply and demand, where prices are determined by the interaction of buyers and sellers. This self-regulating mechanism, famously referred to as the "invisible hand" by economist Adam Smith, ensures that resources are allocated efficiently and goods are produced in response to consumer needs. Competition among businesses fosters innovation, lowers prices, and improves quality, benefiting consumers and driving economic progress.
