  The history of civil rights in America is deeply intertwined with the nation’s founding principles, yet it is also defined by contradictions that stem from its treatment of African Americans. Slavery, which was institutionalized from the country’s early days, placed millions of African people in bondage and marked the beginning of a long struggle for racial equality. Enslaved individuals were considered property rather than people, denied basic human rights, and subjected to a life of forced labor and brutality. This practice was vital to the economic growth of the southern states, where plantations relied on enslaved labor to produce cash crops like cotton, tobacco, and sugar. The dehumanizing nature of slavery created an enduring racial hierarchy that persisted even after its formal abolition. 
  The end of the Civil War in 1865, with the passage of the 13th Amendment, theoretically liberated enslaved people. However, the promise of freedom was not immediately realized, as the southern states passed a series of laws known as Black Codes. These laws sought to maintain white dominance by severely limiting the rights and freedoms of African Americans. The Black Codes restricted mobility, employment opportunities, and legal protections, pushing many freedmen and women back into forced labor through sharecropping arrangements that mirrored slavery in many ways. Despite these setbacks, African Americans began to organize, laying the groundwork for future civil rights movements.

  Thanks to his rise in the military and politics, Crassus’s renown and riches heavily influenced his contemporaries. In the wake of the Third Servile War, Crassus’ patronage helped position Caesar to be appointed governor of Hispania Ulterior. In order to maintain political office, which made him immune from prosecution for his debts, he left for modern day Spain before his praetorship expired. Caesar made this move knowing that governors were immune from prosecution, but governors also had vitally important military responsibilities via command of whatever legions were garrisoned in their territory. It would be as governor that Caesar’s military career truly took off, starting with his victories over a couple of local tribes. These military successes earned him the title Imperator, the Roman equivalent of the title of Commander.  
  	Likewise, Caesar was heavily sponsored in his run for Consul by Crassus, and in a brilliant stroke of diplomacy, he succeeded in reconciling Crassus with Pompey, who was Rome’s most powerful general at the time. Alongside Pompey and Caesar, Crassus established the First Triumvirate, with Crassus supplying the funds, Pompey the muscle, and Caesar the political clout necessary for governing the city. Though later triumvirates officially wielded power, like the Second Triumvirate (which formed in the wake of Caesar’s assassination and included his heir Augustus and longtime general Mark Antony), this First Triumvirate acted behind the scenes to run Rome unofficially. 
  	The triumvirate would come to an end when Crassus met a sudden and unexpected end while campaigning in the east against the Parthians. Ironically, his failed campaign is better remembered than the rest of his life because of the way his reputation brought about his manner of death: ancient writers claimed that shortly after he was killed in fighting, the Parthians poured molten gold down his throat and then used his head as a prop in a play.

  The self-admitted author of The Chemical Marriage, Johann Valentin Andreæ, born in Württemberg in 1586, was twenty-eight years of age when that work was first published. It was presumably written about twelve years prior to its publication--or when the author was fifteen or sixteen years old. The fact is almost incredible that one so young could produce a volume containing the wealth of symbolic thought and philosophy hidden between the lines of The Chemical Marriage. This book makes the earliest known reference to Christian Rosencreutz, and is generally regarded as the third of the series of original Rosicrucian manifestoes. As a symbolic work, the book itself is hopelessly irreconcilable with the statements made by Andreæ concerning it. The story of The Chemical Marriage relates in detail a series of incidents occurring to an aged man, presumably the Father C.R.C. of the Fama and Confessio. If Father C.R.C. was born in 1378, as stated in the Confessio, and is identical with the Christian Rosencreutz of The Chemical Marriage, he was elevated to the dignity of a Knight of the Golden Stone in the eighty-first year of his life (1459). In the light of his own statements, it is inconceivable that Andreæ could have been Father Rosy Cross.
