  Elizabeth Eleanor Siddall was born on the 25th July, 1829 in London into a working-class family where she received an ‘ordinary education’.   
  Whilst accounts differ, it is clear that she met the Pre-Raphaelite painter William Deverell whilst working in a millinery shop and he asked her to model for him, describing her as "magnificently tall, with a lovely figure, and a face of the most delicate and finished modelling ... she has grey eyes, and her hair is like dazzling copper, and shimmers with luster."  She personified female beauty for the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood and her face became well known in Victorian Britain, gracing many famous paintings such as John Everett Millais's Ophelia, where she is portrayed drowned, floating in a pond. From the experience she also caught pneumonia.  
  Although Siddal (she later changed the spelling of her name) endured a toxic and probably controlling relationship with Dante Gabriel Rossetti, who wouldn’t allow her to model for anyone but himself, she made great strides under his tuition and in her endeavours as an artist.  She was the only woman to exhibit with the Pre-Raphaelites in 1857 where she sold one of her paintings to an American collector. 
  She created many paintings, often inspired by Medieval themes, but her output of poetry was scant despite the positive reception to her verse.  Their motifs were sad and often tragic, dwelling on lost or doomed love.  As well they suggest a strong connection with nature and often plead with God with a haunting yet evocative simplicity. 
  Allied to this was a laudanum addiction which may have contributed to a still-born birth in 1861 and from which she never fully recovered.   
  Elizabeth Siddal committed suicide by an overdose, whilst pregnant, on the 11th February 1862.  She was 32.

  FINALIST FOR THE 2023 DOROTHY LIVESAY POETRY PRIZE 
  Ways of Seeing meets Mary Ruefle in these visual-art-inflected poems 
  Though they started from Sheryda Warrener’s impulse to see herself more clearly, the poems in Test Piece ended up becoming more expansive meditations on seeing and vision. They engage with the process and practice of art-making, and specifically with abstract minimalist works like those by Eva Hesse, Anne Truitt, Ruth Asawa, and Agnes Martin. 
  Not-seeing/not-knowing is a motif, as is weave, grid, pattern, rhythm of interiors, domestic life. These poems are informed by collage, by the act of bringing images and lines together. With their echoes and reverberations (hand, mirror, body, clear, form, face), a greater complexity is revealed. 
  "In conversation with visual art, mirrors, and the traces of self we assemble through encounter, Sheryda Warrener’s Test Piece holds an expansive place to dwell with the phenomenological. Interacting with event and object, reflection and parataxis, the writing asks us to consider contingent spaces and the matter of matter and meaning making. The poems adhere as arrangement, as a consideration of relationality.   "Sheryda Warrener's newest poetry collection unspools as a complex weave of repeated motifs, ritualistic gestures, and deeply embodied observations. I’m especially struck by the influence of twentieth-century women artists within the collection: meditations on Eva Hesse, Agnes Martin, and Sherrie Levine’s works structure much of Test Piece. Palimpsests of photographed interiors, where living and writing collide lyrically and randomly, combine with floating textual cut-ups of variegating transparency.   Since childhood, Janice Whyne has been a words person, writing prose-filled Christmas cards, songs and poetry. She sees poetry as a means of self-expression. A conduit and a safe space for our emotions, feelings and lived experiences. She's a Londoner by birthplace, a Jamaican by birthright, and also regards Indonesia as another homeland. 
  In Conversation is a personal milestone in Janice's journey of rediscovering her creative self. Along the way, she's ventured into the world of open mics, spoken word and poetry slams; winning 1st runner-up at the Ubud Writers & Readers Festival Poetry Slam 2019 & 2022. 
  The poems in In Conversation began their lives with a word(s) exchanged in conversation or that captured her attention in something she was listening to or viewing. She regards them as articulations of the said and unsaid; with the poetic voice in them not always hers, but rather an expression of the voice(s) of others. 
  Readers have described it as unapologetic, raw, poignant, vulnerable and brave: a journey. 
  "It speaks of someone that feels and loves much for this world, the wonderful imperfect people in it, and the injustices that go on."  
  Themes of life, loss, love, protest and more are awaiting all who choose to engage in conversation with these poems. 
  Her poem 'Sitting with Amazing' is part of The Poetry Archive Now Worldview 2021 Winners collection. Other poems have been featured in ‘Coffee & Contemplation: a taste of empowerment’ (2020), Coffee People Zine, Issue 10 (2020), All My Relations, Volume 5, Talbot-Heindl (2023), ‘Her locks unveiled: poems from the Black in White poetry competition’ (2023) as well as in other online and printed mediums.

  A baby is born in 1666, the year of "Fire Horse" according to Japanese tradition, at the House of Metzengerstein in an area between Royal Hungary and the territory inhabited by Transylvanian Saxons.
