Sinossi

In "William Lilly's History of His Life and Times, from the Year 1602 to 1681," the esteemed astrologer and writer William Lilly presents a fascinating autobiographical account that intertwines personal narrative with the tumultuous socio-political landscape of 17th-century England. Grounded in the literary style of the era, Lilly employs a reflective prose that balances vivid storytelling with astrological insights, offering readers not only a glimpse into his life but also the historical context of the English Civil War, the Plague, and the Restoration. This work serves as a crucial primary source for understanding the complex interactions between personal experience and wider historical currents, enriched by Lilly's profound astrological interpretations that shape his worldview. William Lilly, born in 1602, was both a practicing astrologer and a chronicler of his times, deeply influenced by the political upheaval of his youth and his profession. His background as the son of a farmer, combined with his intellectual curiosity, spurred him to explore the intricacies of both astrological practice and historical documentation. Lilly's integrity as a scholar and his engagement with contemporary events shaped his writing, giving readers the unique perspective of a man who lived through extraordinary transformations in society and governance. This book comes highly recommended for readers interested in astrology, history, or biographical narratives that reflect the interplay between personal and collective experiences. Lilly's keen observations and eloquent prose not only illuminate his own life but also capture the spirit of an era marked by change and upheaval, making it a valuable addition to any scholar's library or anyone seeking to understand the confluence of personal belief and historical reality.

As Dede Montgomery moves through grief to accept the death of her father, the stories in My Music Man shed light on change, acceptance, and forgiveness amid close personal relationships and Oregon’s natural landscapes. The reader is catapulted into autumn on the Willamette’s riverbank in the 1960s with the author and her brothers, where they discover their father’s own childhood stories and the intimate relationship he shares with the land. Tales about seven generations of family weave between time periods, held together by the constancy of place and colored by memories of picking berries and filberts, traveling through the West Linn locks, and swimming in the river on a hot summer day. Montgomery describes small-town life in a school where everyone knows everybody, and how it felt to be an only girl in what often felt like a never-ending sea of boys. Chapters depict stories about place, seasons, gender, relationships and recovery. This book is to be savored. Yet it's much more than a memoir - it's a multi-generational story, lovingly told, of a family deeply tied to Oregon's history. Additional written information such as photographs, family tree and references may be found on the author's website at https://dedemontgomery.com (My Music Man: Audio Book Supplement).

  • Stand Watie: The Life and Legacy of the Cherokee Chief Who Became a Confederate General - cover

Stand Watie: The Life and Legacy...

Stand Watie’s life connects the traditional Cherokee homeland in Tennessee and Georgia, the fight within the tribe over leaving for the West or staying on their homeland and trying to resist, and the Trail of Tears. At the same time, his life also includes the ongoing split between mixed-blood and full-blood Cherokee in the Cherokee Nation, and the chaos of Indian Territory during the Civil War.
On the surface, Indian Territory was peaceful and fairly prosperous, but old resentments simmered under the surface. The most dangerous of these was in the Cherokee Nation. Following the Cherokee removal, the leaders of the faction of the tribe that had actually signed the Treaty of New Echota suffered violence. There had been a law that giving away Cherokee land was punishable by death, and several of the leaders who signed the treaty were murdered. Stand Watie was one of the signers, and he barely escaped, but one of his brothers was executed.
The Principal Chief was John Ross. He and his faction managed to retain political control of the Cherokee tribe, but there was lasting enmity between the Watie and Ross factions of the tribe. In a broad sense, the signers of the hated treaty were mixed-blood Cherokee, and the resistance had been led by full-bloods. Stand Watie headed the mixed-blood faction and John Ross the full-blood faction. Ironically, John Ross himself was mixed-blood and Watie was a full-blood, but regardless, this tribal split had important ramifications for the Cherokee in the coming war.
Like the country as a whole, the Cherokee Nation was split over the question of slavery, and with an estimated 100 slaves owned, Watie was the biggest native slaveholder in the region. At the start of the war, Watie was commissioned as a colonel in Confederate service and later as a brigadier general. His 1st Cherokee Mounted Rifles Regiment fought more engagements than any other Confederate unit west of the Mississippi River.

The notorious history of two nineteenth-century hamlets in western New York, famous for an era of bustling commerce—and criminality.   The Town of Mendon and the Village of Honeoye Falls are today quiet western New York suburbs, but they weren't always so idyllic. In years past, the village was a center of commerce, manufacturing and railroads, and by the mid-nineteenth century, this prosperity brought with it an element of mayhem. Horse stealing was commonplace. Saloons and taverns were abundant. Street scuffles and barroom brawls were regular, especially on Saturday nights, after the laborers were paid. By Sunday morning, numerous drunks—like Manley Locke, who would eventually go on to kill another man in a fight—were confined to the lockup in the village hall. It was at this time that the Village of Honeoye Falls earned the name “Murderville.” As the town and village turn two hundred, join local historians Diane Ham and Lynne Menz as they explore the peaceful region’s vicious history.   Includes photos!

This is a guide to life in the club that nobody wants to join.

Nobody chooses to be bald. Nobody wants to look into the mirror and be confronted with an absence. Nobody gains any comfort from having a slightly better idea of what their skull looks like.

Stuart Heritage has been bald for two years. But before he accepted the inevitable, he spent a number of years ineptly trying to conceal this fact with an array of expensive treatments and terrible haircuts. Can a man go bald with dignity? Maybe. But can a man go bald with more dignity than Stuart Heritage? Oh good god yes, and this book is his attempt to make that happen for you.

Part-manual-part-tantrum, this is a self-deprecating, funny and genuinely helpful guide to being bald: what really happens, why it matters, and how to feel much less crap about it.
