Sinossi

In "Horror Classics - Boxed Set: 30+ Occult & Supernatural Novels and Stories," William Hope Hodgson curates an impressive anthology of chilling tales that traverse the realms of the occult and the supernatural. His distinctive literary style, characterized by an evocative use of atmosphere and a deft handling of psychological horror, immerses readers in a world where the boundaries between reality and the otherworldly blur. This collection showcases Hodgson's mastery of crafting unsettling narratives, drawing from the early 20th-century literary contexts of gothic horror and weird fiction, where existential dread intertwines with human experience in stark landscapes and eerie settings. William Hope Hodgson, often overshadowed in the pantheon of horror writers, was influenced by his own experiences at sea and his fascination with the unknown, which permeate his work. His unique perspective as a war veteran further enriches his narratives, imbuing them with layers of fear derived both from external threats and internal struggles. Hodgson's exploration of these themes illustrates a deeper reflection on humanity's confrontation with its own limitations and the unfathomable forces that may lie beyond comprehension. This anthology is a treasure trove for enthusiasts of the supernatural and scholars alike, offering a compelling exploration of fear, existentialism, and the human psyche. Readers who appreciate the rich legacy of horror literature will find this boxed set not only a collection of stories but an opportunity to engage with the profound questions of life, death, and what may lurk beyond the veil of our understanding.

Lady Eleanor Furneaux Smith was born in Birkenhead, Merseyside in England on the 7th August 1902 into a privileged family steeped in titles and politics.

Part of her education was at Miss Douglas's school at Queen's Gate. Here she met and befriended several other young women that the British tabloid press would later call the ‘Bright Young Things’, a group of bohemian young aristocrats and socialites in 1920s London.

Smith's paternal great-grandmother, was said to have been a Gypsy, and this sparked an early and life-long interest with the Romani people, she even went so far as to learn to read and speak the language, which she called ‘musical and broken.’

Her life was full of adventure and mishaps. A mistaken encounter with a man she thought could help her into the film business turned out to threats of marriage and death from a man wanted for the murder of his father. She was even arrested twice. Once for listing her career as a journalist and another, in Rome, for walking around in a sleeveless dress.

Smith began her career writing society gossip columns for various newspapers but later received an offer to write for the newly-formed Great Carmo Circus, with which she travelled for several years and was the source material for many of her books.

Her first novel, ‘Red Wagon’, was published when she was 28 and it was an immediate bestseller. A prolific writer several of her works were also adapted for films.

Smith also wrote ghost stories and others flavoured with evil. Her support for the Conservative party may be forgiven but her attributed quote to be a ‘warm adherent of General Franco’ less so.

Lady Eleanor Furneaux Smith died on the 20th October 1945 in Westminster after a long illness. She was 43.

    Happy New Year not!
Fate, destiny, purpose what does it all mean?
For Lynn, it means being a loving wife, a protective mother, a loyal friend and now the hidden ace in the hole for a host of earthbound Angels. It also means putting her marriage, her friendships, and her own self-preservation, through the supernatural ringer.
When self-centered, popular restaurateur Kristopher Snow, hidden member of the Earthbound Seraphim and one of the seven Guards of Haven, goes missing Lynn offers up the use of her celestial radar abilities to aid in locating the lost Angel.
Who could have predicted that being related to a preternatural being could be so perilous? DNA doesn't always make you family, but in Lynn's case it sure does link you to a sizeable legion of otherworldly beings beings who right now need her gifts in their time of crisis. Unfortunately, there are others of their kind who seek to use Lynn's abilities to guarantee anarchy ensues.
Would you agreed to help these outsiders, these earthbound Angels, knowing that doing so could put not only yourself—but possibly everyone you love, in danger? Are the risks worth the gains, worth the benefit of their protection? What if those who you aid today become the saviors you end up needing in the not so distant future?
This novel, like the others in succession, is not a standalone story.
Book 5, Haven Lost, is the next in The Guard Trilogy Extended Series - The Guards of Haven. Although the original three books of The Guard Trilogy can stand alone as a complete story, and even though these next novels adhere to the original storyline, listeners should complete the trilogy before going on to listen to the next books in the extended series.
