Sinossi

W. W. Jacobs'Äô "Many Cargoes" is a compelling collection of short stories that exemplifies the author'Äôs keen observational skills and mastery of wit. Set primarily against the backdrop of late 19th and early 20th century maritime life, Jacobs captures the nuances of human nature through the eccentricities of his characters, who navigate both the tranquility and tumult of life at sea. With a distinctive literary style characterized by a blend of humor and realism, Jacobs weaves together tales that reflect the diverse experiences of sailors, fishermen, and the coastal towns they inhabit, offering a rich portrait of a bygone era in British literature. W. W. Jacobs, an influential figure in the early 20th-century literary scene, drew inspiration from his own upbringing in Wapping, London, a location steeped in maritime history. Having worked as a clerk while cultivating his passion for writing, Jacobs'Äôs experiences exposed him to the lives of seafaring individuals, thus informing the authenticity and vibrancy evident in "Many Cargoes." His works often mirror his sharp sense of humor and poignant insights into the human condition, making him a beloved figure among readers of light fiction. This anthology is recommended for readers who appreciate richly textured narratives infused with humor and an exploration of character. Jacobs'Äô engaging storytelling invites readers to consider not just the idyllic aspects of life at sea, but also the challenges faced by those who dwell on its ever-changing surface. "Many Cargoes" stands as a delightful testament to the enduring power of storytelling and serves as a perfect introduction to Jacobs' oeuvre.

“Reading Roberto Bolaño is like . . . watching the tracks of art and life merge at the horizon and linger there like a dream from which we awake inspired to look more attentively at the world.” —Francine Prose, The New York Times“We savor all he has written, as every offering is a portal into the elaborate terrain of his genius.” —Patti SmithAn aging judge retires from Buenos Aires to the family ranch in the Pampas to battle feral rabbits and reclaim the dignity of the gaucho life. An obscure Argentinian writer journeys to Paris to face down the filmmaker who has made a career out of plagiarizing his novels. An intrepid detective investigates a series of grisly murders—among his fellow sewer rats. Riffing on Borges and Kafka, yet utterly and inimitably Roberto Bolaño, these stories testify to his mastery of the short form. Rounding out the collection are two of his most provocative and piercing essays, “Literature + Illness = Illness” and “The Myths of Cthulhu,” each crackling with his signature black humor and incomparable powers of perception and critique. The Insufferable Gaucho is an essential part of the Bolaño oeuvre.A Macmillan Audio production from Farrar, Straus and Giroux.

Montague Rhodes James is cited as perhaps the greatest English writer of ghost stories, an opinion few would disagree with.
James was born on 1st August 1862 at Goodnestone Parsonage in Kent, where his father was Curate but at age 3 the family went to live at Livermere, near Bury St Edmunds in East Anglia.
From early childhood he had a passion for mediaeval books and antiques. He was educated initially as a boarder at Temple Grove School in East Sheen, west London, before gaining a scholarship to Eton and thence Cambridge where he gained a double first, becoming a distinguished linguist and mediaevalist.
Before the Great War vacations were usually spent touring Europe absorbing cultures and references for his later writing.
A man of enormous knowledge it was said he timed his breakfast egg whilst he completed the Times crossword.
Many of his elegant yet terrifying tales were created by discarding the prevailing gothic cliches and placing his characters and narrative in a realistic setting. Thereby the stories gained atmosphere and menace on a grand scale and he was famed as the originator of the antiquarian ghost story.
Although story-telling and writing these 30 or so tales was a hobby, when published their effect transformed the genre and still chill the bones in our more modern times.
James was also a medievalist scholar and translator whose work remains highly respected. He was also Provost of Eton College between 1918 and 1936.
M R James died on 12th June 1936 at Eton in Buckinghamshire. He was 73.

It was published under her pen name "Currer Bell" on 19 October 1847 by Smith, Elder & Co. of London. The first American edition was published the following year by Harper & Brothers of New York. Jane Eyre is a Bildungsroman that follows the experiences of its eponymous heroine, including her growth to adulthood and her love for Mr Rochester, the brooding master of Thornfield Hall. The novel revolutionized prose fiction by being the first to focus on its protagonist's moral and spiritual development through an intimate first-person narrative, where actions and events are coloured by psychological intensity. Charlotte Brontë has been called the "first historian of the private consciousness", and the literary ancestor of writers like Marcel Proust and James Joyce.

Experience life and hardships in turn-of-the-century Russia with this collection of provocative stories by one of the greatest writers of all time. Anton Chekhov captures life in late-nineteenth-century Russia with these evocative tales. For example, in “The Schoolmistress,” a hard-working, underpaid schoolteacher contemplates dating a man she knows is terrible for her. In “A Nervous Breakdown,” an idealistic young law student cannot handle what he witnesses after a night in Moscow’s red light district. The author of such plays as The Cherry Orchard and Uncle Vanya, Anton Chekhov was also a prolific writer of short stories. His style, as present in this collection, will remind readers of other great nineteenth-century authors such as Guy de Maupassant.
