Summary

'KWANTU MEANS HOME'
For decades, African spirituality has been demonised or met with suspicion. Many people find themselves at a crossroads that has them questioning their religious upbringing while trying to understand their place within African spiritual practice. There are those who have to choose between being a believer, usually in the Christian faith, or believing in their ancestors. As the cultural trajectory of the world shifts, more people desire a deeper understanding of ancestral practices, their history and their relevance to modern life.
Journey Kwantu is inspired by Vusumzi Ngxande's popular podcast of the same name that delves into South African spiritual identity, showing how it has evolved over hundreds of years. The book is rooted in extensive historical research, lived experiences and interviews with healers, teachers and ordinary people trying to live their truth.
With a unique ability to simplify complex issues, the author endeavours to answer taboo questions like, 'Who are we?' and 'How did we come to believe what we believe?' In the process, he deals with challenges he has struggled with on his own spiritual journey, from death, the afterlife and the authority of ancestors versus the power of God, to more practical matters like performing rituals in urban areas and understanding lineage and its impact on one's spiritual life.
Deeply perceptive and engaging, Journey Kwantu offers guidance and sustenance to African believers.

Six pen-portraits describe the lives and ministry of the six men who served as Archbishop of Canterbury during Queen Victoria’s long reign. Each of the archbishops has a dedicated chapter, so the book provides a chronological narrative following the life and career of each, and describes the individual primate's involvement and management of the Church of England in the years in which he was called to office. Each chapter looks at the way the Church developed under the leadership of each archbishop as well as the life and work of the individual Primate. It describes the ecclesiastical and political controversies which occurred in Church life in the Victorian period and also the Church's political interaction with the establishment.

The book shows how the Victorian Church engaged with the issues of its day, both political and ecclesial, and how, under the leadership of these six remarkable men, Anglicanism became a worldwide church.

‘I cannot help but see the bodies of my near ancestors in the current caravans of desperate souls fleeing from place to place, chased by famine, war and toxins. Ideas honed in slavery – of the otherness, the boorishness, the inferiority of thy neighbour – have continued to travel through American society.’
The story of slavery in America is not over. It lives on in how we speak to one another, in how we treat one another, in how our societies are organised. In Giving a Damn, the legal scholar Patricia Williams finds that when you begin to unpick current debates around immigration, freedom of speech, the culture wars and wall-building, beneath them lies the unexamined history of enslavement in the West. Our ability to dehumanize one another can be traced all the way from the plantation to the US President’s Twitter account.
Williams begins in the American South with Gone With the Wind (still the second most popular book in the USA after the Bible), that nostalgic tale full of the myths of the Southern belle, Southern culture, ‘good food and good manners’. The scene is seductive, from a distance. How nice it is to paper over the obliging slavery at the novel’s core, and enjoy the wisteria-covered plantations, now the venue for weddings.
But Williams’s maternal great-grandmother was a slave, her great-grandfather a slave-owner, and papering over has left us in a world that has never been more segregated, incarcerated or separated from each other. Williams wants to know which ideas brought the richest and most diverse nation on the planet to the brink of resurgent, violent division and what this means for the rest of the world. And she finds that most of those ideas began in slavery.
Short-listed for numerous prizes, Giving a Damn is a compelling exploration of the enduring legacy of slavery in the United States. Williams incisive analysis of the social and racial dynamics of the country offers a sobering perspective on the state of civil rights and liberties.
For fans of Sarah Churchwell (The Many Lives of Marilyn Monroe), Sathnam Sanghera (Empireland), and Chris Hedges (America).

What is the narcissism epidemic? When our partner is a narcissist, only those who’ve actually experienced the madness will ever understand what we’re going through. When Love Is a Lie is a straight-up, tell-all book about narcissism in relationships that skips the clinical bullshit to focus solely on the personal experience. A narrative that holds nothing back, Zari Ballard’s story will educate, enlighten, and empower you to evaluate (and fully understand) the mind-boggling dysfunction in your own relationship. Compare her story to your own and watch what happens. As it has for thousands of abuse victims worldwide, When Love Is a Lie is going to resonate with you in ways that no other book about narcissism ever has.Any relationship involving a person with a narcissistic personality disorder will inevitably take a dark turn. We stay in the relationship thinking we can fix this person or love him/her out of their bad behavior but the truth is that narcissists, sociopaths and psychopaths can never be fixed – not with love, therapy, or any magic pill. Life quickly becomes a roller coaster ride from hell without a harness and with Lucifer himself at the controls. If that sounds dramatic, then you’ve never loved a narcissist. If that sounds familiar, then this very special book may just change your life. When Love Is A Lie breaks down the signs of a narcissistic personality, exposes the narcissist’s way of thinking, and explains exactly why a partner with a narcissistic personality will…...over time, deliberately and methodically manage down your expectations of the relationship so that you expect less and less and he gets away with more..mimic the appropriate emotions at opportune times to achieve desired results..use the silent treatment, disappearances/reappearances, and other demoralizing (and passive-aggressive) control tactics to punish those who dare to call him/her out on questionable behaviors..create constant narcissistic chaos and turmoil even – and especially – during the “good” times as a way of keeping you in a heightened state of co-dependent anxiety 24/7..juggle many relationships at once – sometimes for years on end – with no one being the wiser, not even youNarcissist abuse is often intentionally passive-aggressive so that we never quite understand what’s happening. Friends and family try to be supportive but they simply don’t get it. This book, from its very first pages, offers a reprieve from this isolation. When Love is a Lie will make you laugh and it may even make you cry but, above all else, it will provide confirmation and validation that YOU are not the problem.
