Summary of Outlive by Peter Attia: The Science and Art of Longevity

The term "longevity" refers to the length of a person's life, which has recently gained increased attention and interest. Throughout history, people and societies have sought to live longer and healthier lives. The past century has seen significant advancements in science, medicine, and technology, leading to higher life expectancies, with many people now reaching their 80s, 90s, and even 100s.
However, just living longer is not enough. It is important to ensure that those extra years are healthy, disease-free, and fulfilling. This concept is known as "healthy longevity," which has become a growing area of research in public health and healthcare.
Why is Longevity Important?
Prolonging life can improve the quality of life, reduce healthcare costs, and promote economic and social well-being. By promoting healthy longevity, people can live longer and more productive lives, contributing to society and their communities. It can also help families and healthcare systems deal with the effects of age-related illnesses such as dementia, cancer, and cardiovascular disease.
Moreover, longer lifespans have significant economic implications. Social security and healthcare systems may face increased pressure as the population ages, and there may be a shortage of labor. By enabling people to continue functioning as productive members of society for longer periods, promoting healthy longevity can help mitigate these challenges.
Longevity also has a substantial impact on relationships with friends and family. By living longer and healthier lives, people have the opportunity to spend more time with loved ones and develop deeper connections, which can lead to more social support, reduced feelings of loneliness and isolation, and improved mental health.
In addition to individual decisions and actions, access to healthcare, education, and employment opportunities are part of the broader social context that affects longevity. To promote healthy aging for everyone, it is crucial to address these social factors that impact health.
It is essential to stay informed on the latest research and evidence-based strategies as our understanding of the science of longevity evolves. By working together, individuals, healthcare professionals, and policymakers can help ensure that people can live longer, better, and more fulfilling lives through the promotion of healthy longevity.

Ulysses S. Grant stood at the center of the American Civil War maelstrom. The Ohio native answered his nation's call to service and finished the war as a lieutenant general in command of the United States Army. Four years later, he ascended to the presidency to better secure the peace he had helped win on the battlefield. Despite his major achievements in war and peace, political and sectional enemies battered his reputation. For nearly a century, his military and political career remained deeply misunderstood.

Since the Civil War centennial, however, Grant's reputation has blossomed into a full renaissance. His military record garners new respect and, more recently, an appreciation for his political career—particularly his strong advocacy for equal rights—is quickly catching up.

Throughout these decades, his personal memoirs marking him as a significant American "Man of Letters" have never gone out of print. Grant at 200: Reconsidering the Life and Legacy of Ulysses S. Grant celebrates the bicentennial of the birth of a man whose towering impact on American history has often been overshadowed and, in many cases, ignored. This collection of essays by some of today's leading Grant scholars offers fresh perspectives on Grant's military career and presidency, as well as underexplored personal topics such as his faith and family life.

Hair is potent. Its presence and its absence has profound influence upon our lives, across race, gender, sexuality, status, and more. It will grow in places you don't like and it may desert you – suddenly, or gradually. Whatever your experience, you have had a relationship with hair and its power. Kajal Odedra considers how hair has shaped society today, from the 'perfect' blondes in the school playground to the angry skinheads on the streets. Mohawks, wigs, afros, these are just a few of the ways in which hair has been part of history and wider activism. The word 'essay' derives from the French 'essayer', meaning 'to try' or 'to attempt'. This is Odedra's 'try' at hair – part memoir, part observation across history, politics, religion, and culture. Hair/Power explores the power, control and ultimate liberation that hair can provide.

The Acropolis, which literally means “a city on the heights,” is a citadel whose currently surviving structures were mostly built during the 5th century B.C. in honor of Athena, the patron goddess of Athens. It functioned as a sacred precinct that contained the city’s most important religious and municipal structures, many of which have remained relatively intact for over 2,000 years. The Propylaea (the gateway to the Acropolis), the Parthenon (the principal shrine to the goddess), the Erechtheion (a shrine that supposedly houses the burial grounds of mythical Athenian kings), and the Temple of Athena Nike all survive to this day, and for these reasons, the Acropolis is perhaps the definitive and most eloquent expression of classical architecture, if not of the classical form itself. The Acropolis, which literally means “a city on the heights,” is a citadel whose currently surviving structures were mostly built during the 5th century B.C. in honor of Athena, the patron goddess of Athens.
The center of political and commercial interaction in the Ancient Greek polis was the agora. The word essentially means a gathering place or an open space, and in all Greek city states, the agora was central to all aspects of daily life and commerce. As the agora developed as a civic space, particularly from the 6th century B.C. onward in Athens, the architectural splendor of the buildings associated with it became an ever more obvious demonstration of the power and glory of Athenian democracy. In its earliest forms, an agora in maritime cities was invariably situated near the sea, while in inland urban centers, it was usually located at the foot of the hill that normally provided the city’s ultimate defense. The agora was always the oldest part of any city and, as such, and as well as being the commercial hub of the area, also became the center of the religious and political life of the polis.
