In 1913, a secretive American millionaire, who lived on the top fl oor of the famous Carlton Hotel, had a crazy idea: to make movies in Johannesburg. And not just any movies but the biggest in the world, huge spectacles with elaborate sets, thousands of extras and epic story lines.
Isidore Schlesinger – better known as 'IW' – built a studio on a farm called Killarney, where he set out to challenge a place in America that was in its infancy: Hollywood.
The glamour, gossip and high drama of IW's studio fitted perfectly into a city experiencing an intoxicating golden age. There was as much action on the movie sets as there was on screen: from political intrigue and the clashing of massive egos to public outbursts, fiery judicial inquiries, disaster and death.
Behind this mad enterprise was a maverick, a tycoon, a recluse, a friend of the famed and the connected. Schlesinger could have held his own in California but he chose as his base the City of Gold, and his indomitable ambition saw his 'Hollywood on the Veld' soar. This is the untold story of the rise and fall of the strangest and most unique movie empire ever.

In ancient China, a woman’s place in society was shaped by a deep-rooted system of values that emphasized hierarchy, duty, and tradition. From birth, girls were taught the virtues of obedience, humility, and domestic responsibility—qualities believed to ensure familial harmony and uphold social order. This framework confined women largely to the private sphere and discouraged female independence. Even so, this ideology did not completely erase their influence. Women often wielded subtle but meaningful power within the home, guiding family affairs, managing finances, and raising the next generation in accordance with moral and cultural norms. 
Women’s lives were further shaped by their class and family background. Elite women had access to education, poetry, and the arts, and they could sometimes play key roles in managing household affairs or even participating in court life. Their influence, though largely informal, could stretch far when navigating palace politics or securing power through marriage alliances. In contrast, women of lower classes worked alongside men in the fields, sold goods in markets, or labored in homes and workshops. These working women formed the backbone of the economy, though their contributions often went unrecorded in historical texts.

Where the Trail Forks is a late 19th century work of literature and is fiction. London's main purpose in this text is to entertain his readers by revealing to them an exciting fictitious event. London ties his story in with naturalism by describing natures terrain and landscape in many instances. Throughout the story there are many encounters with nature itself as well as wild animals such as dogs. Jack londons diction in this piece can be related to the diction reflecting the time period this work of literature was written. The way the sentences are constructed also reflect back on his time period using terminology that is less common in todays society.  The tone of the story starts off London sets the stage for the setting by starting the story in a forest full of snow covered pine trees with a handful of men waiting by a campfire protecting their food from a pack of hungry, wild dogs.
