Synopsis

Since the age of fourteen Damon Leiter has had a brain-computer interface implanted beneath his skull to correct a neurological disorder. As a teenager, it branded him as an outcast—as an adult it endows him with extraordinary abilities: he may represent the next step in human evolution. When computerized brain augments replace smartphones as the must-have status item, mega-corporations and governments conspire together and marketing becomes mind control. Damon is the only one equipped to lead a global resistance movement. Caught between the fervour of his followers and the tide of rampant consumerism, he can’t be sure he isn’t playing into the hands of the rich and powerful. They may even be in the right. Maybe the real enemy of humankind is Damon Leiter.

When we first meet sharp and witty Capitola she is living among beggars and street urchins, and dressed as a boy because a boy can get work and be safe, whereas a girl is left to starve for want of "proper" employment. Unknown to her, Capitola has a very rich elderly guardian who finds her at a providential moment and takes her back to his palatial mansion where she finds herself "decomposing above ground for want of having my blood stirred."
But not to fear. There are bandits, true-loves, evil men, long-lost mothers, and sweet women friends in Capitola's future - not to mention thunder storms, kidnap attempts, and duels. The pace is fast, the action wonderfully unbelievable. This is escape literature at its nineteenth-century best, with a woman at its center who makes you feel strong, daring, and reckless.
Here's what people had to say about the book:
It is really stunning to encounter such a high-spirited and defiantly independent female character in a novel written over 150 years ago, and, more importantly, is allowed to remain so from the first moment we meet her (disguised as a boy on the mean streets of New York City) to when her remarkable story neatly concludes on the last novel's last page.
    A fascinating mystery/drama set in the 1800's.
Everyone should read this hidden gem.
Among my daughters' this is a unanimous favorite. Young Capitola is a feisty spitfire of a girl who would rather face danger than avoid it. In many ways, she has the spirit of another orphan girl, but demonstrates her boldness in far more serious, even perilous, situations.
This is by far my favorite book I’ve read to date!Absolutely love the story and characters. It’s fascinating to see how all the character’s backgrounds intertwine with one another. Definitely recommend to anyone and everyone!

The jury was unanimous. Their verdict was that Rory Spenser murdered his former blood clinic colleague. His protestations of innocence, relying heavily on an unconvincing alibi, failed to sway them. Four years into his life sentence, a ray of hope emerges. A private investigator hired by Spenser's mother unearths the alleged alibi, who could not be located for the trial. She lends her support to an application for a pardon for a miscarriage of justice.

To the surprise of supporters and detractors alike, Spenser is granted a free pardon and released from his sentence with compensation, though not acquitted of the crime. He moves into community accommodation in Lambeth North and resumes the life of a free citizen. A book deal ensures he will remain in the public eye. And his instinct to enjoy life to the fullest ensures he will not be hamstrung or prudent for long. He believes the world is his oyster.

A journalist and the private investigator take a closer look at Spenser's history and the circumstances of the alibi that tipped the scales in favour of Spenser. Was the alibi all that efficacious? Was it a genuine miscarriage of justice? Their paths will cross Spenser's and there will be consequences.
