Sinossi

Richard Wagner's monumental cycle, "The Ring of the Nibelung," rendered in this illustrated edition, vibrantly intertwines mythology, philosophy, and a deep-seated critique of contemporary society. Composed of four operas'Äî"Das Rheingold," "Die Walk√ºre," "Siegfried," and "G√∂tterd√§mmerung"'ÄîWagner employs a unique form of musical storytelling, utilizing leitmotifs to convey character and thematic development. This innovative fusion of text and music embodies the ideals of the 19th-century Gesamtkunstwerk, or total work of art, and showcases Wagner'Äôs unparalleled ability to evoke profound emotional and intellectual responses through an integration of narrative and visual artistry. Wagner, a titan of opera and an influential figure in classical music, was profoundly inspired by Germanic mythology and philosophical thought, particularly the works of Schopenhauer and Nietzsche. His own tumultuous life experiences, including political exile and personal strife, informed his artistic vision, compelling him to explore themes of power, greed, and redemption that permeate "The Ring of the Nibelung." This work not only reflects Wagner'Äôs genius but also offers insights into the cultural zeitgeist of his time. This illustrated edition of "The Ring of the Nibelung" is a must-read for scholars, musicians, and all who appreciate opera and storytelling at their finest. It invites readers to delve into Wagner's complex world, uncovering the layers of meaning and artistic innovation that have established this work as a keystone of Western cultural heritage.

The Yamato period, spanning from roughly the 3rd to the 7th century, marks the emergence of Japan’s first centralized political power. At the heart of this transformation was the Yamato clan, a dominant force that laid the foundation for Japan’s imperial lineage. While early Japan was fragmented into numerous rival clans, the Yamato rulers gradually asserted their dominance, forging alliances, engaging in warfare, and adopting foreign influences to solidify their authority.
One of the key factors behind the Yamato clan’s rise was its strategic control over fertile land in the Kinki region, an area well-suited for agriculture. This economic advantage allowed them to amass resources necessary to support a growing military force. By subjugating neighboring clans or bringing them under their influence through political marriages and alliances, the Yamato rulers expanded their reach across central and western Japan. The development of a hierarchical system of governance helped them maintain order, as powerful regional chieftains were brought into a centralized network of control under the Yamato court.
Military strength played a significant role in the Yamato clan’s dominance. Archaeological evidence from kofun, or large burial mounds, reveals that these early rulers possessed advanced weaponry, including iron swords and armor, likely influenced by interactions with Korea and China. These military advantages enabled them to assert control over rival clans and protect their growing territory from external threats. The construction of these elaborate burial sites also served as a demonstration of power and legitimacy, reinforcing the Yamato rulers’ status as semi-divine figures.

The definitive biography of musical legend Bessie Smith: “A landmark in the writing of jazz history . . . First-rate” (The Washington Post).   Known as the “Empress of the Blues,” Bessie Smith was a successful vaudeville entertainer who became the highest paid African American performer of the Roaring Twenties. This revised and expanded biography debunks many of the myths that have circulated since her untimely death in 1937.   Writing with insight and candor about the singer’s personal life and career, the author supplements his research with dozens of interviews with her relatives, friends, and associates—in particular Ruby Walker Smith, a niece by marriage who toured with Bessie for over a decade. Also included in this updated edition are more details of Bessie’s early years, new interview material, and a chapter devoted to events and responses that followed the book’s original publication.   “The product of painstaking research . . . “For twelve years, others have tried to tell our story. Others have tried to put into words how two ten-year-old twins came to be called the biggest pop phenomenon in the Nordics. Now it’s our turn.”
Sold-out concerts, prestigious awards and screaming fans were everyday life for Marcus and Martinus for many years, but just as they were about to embark on their first world tour, everything they had built came crashing down. As the Covid-19 pandemic spread, the twin brothers found themselves isolated in their hometown, forced to face their first major crisis. While the situation gave them a rare opportunity to live a normal life, one question gnawed at them: Would their audience welcome them back — this time as adult artists?
For the first time, Marcus and Martinus share the darker side of growing up in the spotlight, the crash that threatened to destroy everything they had worked for, and the challenges of finding their own voices after always being seen as one half of a duo.
Marcus & Martinus burst onto the international music scene in 2012 and have since continued to captivate audiences with their charismatic performances. With millions of followers worldwide and over a billion streams, the Norwegian duo has sold out arenas across Scandinavia.

Spid, Bid and Herman are about to blast off for an adventure on the moon. But what will they find when they get there? Is the moon really made of cheese? And does a moonster called Mr Cheezy Feet really live there? This audiobook features two songs: 'The Cheese Song (Mr. Cheezy Feet)' and 'Queenie'. You can also find music videos of the songs at https://spidthespider.com and https://www.youtube.com/spidthespider. Spid is a lowly spider, who wants to better himself, write songs, and marry his girlfriend Bid, though he is prone to hilarious mishaps mostly of his own making. He is hard-working, cool, and a role model for young children. As well as encouraging children to read and love books, Spid's adventures also teach valuable life lessons, including determination and what psychologists call a 'growth mindset' (desire to better oneself and succeed), the importance of friendship, and sustainability. With very creative prose, Spid's adventures are fun for parents, and teachers to read to, and with, their children. They present lots of opportunities to invest dramatic licence thus helping adults and children interact and engage. The humour works at multiple levels from silly and slapstick to more sophisticated wordplay and concepts. Thus, children will discover more and enjoy reading the stories multiple times. The early history of Japan was shaped by three key periods—the Kofun, Yamato, and Asuka—each playing a crucial role in laying the foundations of the Japanese nation.
The Kofun Period, named after the massive burial mounds built for elite rulers, saw the rise of warrior aristocracy and the early consolidation of power by influential clans. This era transitioned into the Yamato Period, during which the Yamato clan emerged as Japan’s first ruling dynasty, establishing the imperial lineage that continues to this day.
The Asuka Period marked a profound transformation as Buddhism, Confucian governance, and Chinese cultural influences began shaping Japan’s political and social structures.
The Taika Reforms introduced centralized administration, strengthening the authority of the emperor.
These three periods together set the stage for Japan’s evolving identity, blending indigenous traditions with foreign influences to create a distinct and enduring civilization.
