Sinossi

Journey into the world of Horace, the celebrated Roman poet of the Augustan Age, and discover the timeless wisdom and beauty of his poetic legacy. A Poet's Echo: Echoes from an Ancient Lyre delves into Horace's remarkable body of work, spanning odes, satires, epistles, and the Ars Poetica, offering a comprehensive exploration of his literary genius and enduring relevance.

In this captivating book, readers will embark on a journey through Horace's life and times, gaining insights into the social, political, and cultural context that shaped his writings. From his humble beginnings in Venusia to his rise through Roman society under the patronage of Maecenas and Augustus, Horace's journey mirrors the transformation of Rome itself during a period of profound change.

Horace's mastery of language and form shines through in his diverse poetic genres. His odes, with their lyrical grace and metrical precision, explore universal themes of love, friendship, morality, and the transience of life. His satires, sharp and witty, employ humor and irony to critique the follies and vices of Roman society, offering a window into the moral and ethical dilemmas of the time.

The epistles, more personal and reflective, reveal Horace's philosophical musings and his relationships with friends and contemporaries. They offer a glimpse into his inner thoughts and provide valuable guidance on how to navigate the complexities of life with wisdom and grace.

In his Ars Poetica, Horace sets forth his principles of poetic composition, emphasizing the importance of unity, coherence, and the careful crafting of language. This treatise has served as a touchstone for aspiring poets throughout the ages, offering invaluable insights into the art and craft of writing poetry.

A Poet's Echo: Echoes from an Ancient Lyre is an essential companion for anyone seeking to delve deeper into Horace's works and appreciate his enduring significance in Western literature. With its comprehensive analysis, insightful commentary, and engaging narrative, this book brings Horace's poetry to life for a new generation of readers.

In the Socrates Meets series, Peter Kreeft revives the classic method of bringing philosophy to life through dialogue. In eight innovative volumes, he uncovers the principles, assumptions, and sometimes dangerous conclusions of some of history’s most influential minds. Each dialogue imagines a purgatory where we can listen in on conversations between Socrates and the great thinkers who, centuries later, picked up the philosopher’s torch. Each conversation investigates one of the philosopher’s key works, a short, readable classic that raises central questions both for philosophy and for life. In this volume, Socrates cross-examines Sigmund Freud, the father of psychoanalysis and author of Civilization and Its Discontents, exploring science, religion, happiness, and the pleasure principle.

"A gripping appraisal of Northern Ireland's turbulent first century. Essential reading for anyone who wants to understand how we have got to where we are today." – Suzanne Breen, Belfast Telegraph
"A timely and lucid analysis of the Troubles that asks hard questions of successive British governments. The good news for the current government is that it also offers some answers." – Rory Carroll, The Guardian

"For God's sake, bring me a large Scotch. What a bloody awful country!" Home Secretary Reginald Maudling, returning from his first visit to Northern Ireland in 1970
As a long and bloody guerrilla war staggered to a close on the island of Ireland, Britain beat a retreat from all but a small portion of the country – and thus, in 1921, Northern Ireland was born.
That partition, says Kevin Meagher, has been an unmitigated disaster for Nationalists and Unionists alike. Following the fraught history of British rule in Ireland, a better future was there for the taking but was lost amid political paralysis, while the resulting fifty years of devolution succeeded only in creating a brooding sectarian stalemate that exploded into the Troubles.
In a stark but reasoned critique, Meagher traces the landmark events in Northern Ireland's century of existence, exploring the missed signals, the turning points, the principled decisions that should have been taken, as well as the raw realpolitik of how Northern Ireland has been governed over the past 100 years.
Thoughtful and sometimes provocative, What a Bloody Awful Country reflects on how both Loyalists and Republicans might have played their cards differently and, ultimately, how the actions of successive British governments have amounted to a masterclass in failed statecraft.

    Great Escapes during the World...

War has always led to prisoners. In ancient times, many were turned into slaves by the victorious armies, while in medieval Europe, they were often returned to their families in return for a ransom, leading to fortune or poverty depending upon which side one was on. By the Napoleonic era, as armies grew in size and professionalism, many were kept in camps for the duration of the fighting, their captors not wanting to restore their enemies' manpower while the fate of nations hung in the balance.
Prisoners were taken across the world, and prisoners of war were typically comprised of two classes: officers and other ranks. Officers were often treated well, as there was still a sort of aristocratic courtesy among officers, particularly among the Germans, British, French, and somewhat less so for the Russians, Italians, and Turks. Concepts such as honor still held considerable currency, and bravery was greatly admired. Enemy officers as a class often had more in common with each other than with the millions of draftees in their armies, so enlisted men as POWs generally were not as well treated.
Regardless of rank though, throughout the war, many of these men did not sit idle. Many spent their time preparing elaborate escape plans in the hopes of returning to their home nations and back to the fight.
The Second World War was full of escape stories, some bold, some tragic, and most filled with courage and ingenuity. The greatest number of successful escapes was made by Allied troops in Europe, including soldiers left behind after the fall of France and airmen shot down in bombing raids, but escapes happened across the world, from Canadian trains to German castles, and from the mountains of Italy to the wilds of Australia. Axis as well as Allied troops made their bids for freedom, keeping both sides on their toes. Everybody was looking to make the next great escape.
