Sinossi

Oscar Wilde's "The Picture of Dorian Gray" is a masterful exploration of aestheticism and moral duplicity, set against the backdrop of Victorian society. The novel employs a rich, lyrical prose style that encapsulates Wilde's trademark epigrams and wit, while simultaneously delving into deep philosophical themes regarding the relationship between beauty, vanity, and moral responsibility. Central to the narrative is the portrait of Dorian Gray, which ages and bears the burden of his sins while he remains perpetually youthful and attractive, embodying the era's tension between outward appearances and inner corruption. Wilde, an emblematic figure of the Decadent movement, was profoundly influenced by his own struggles with identity and social conventions. Drawing on his experiences in the tight-laced Victorian milieu, Wilde's work often interrogated the ethics of art, beauty, and self-indulgence, ultimately reflecting his critique of societal hypocrisy. His own trials with conformity and morality render "The Picture of Dorian Gray" not only a fiction but a personal manifesto against the constraints of his time. For readers fascinated by the complexities of human desire and the various masks individuals wear in society, Wilde's novel presents an unforgettable journey into the darker corners of the soul. Highly recommended for those interested in a provocative blend of philosophical inquiry and literary artistry, this work continues to resonate with contemporary discussions on identity and ethics.

Feems explained, with the use of a tiny bowl, what the whole thing was about and the science behind how it worked. He never quite got to the point where he explained how in God’s name he had convinced them to let him do it, but we didn’t care.
“So, the swimming pool is going to be emptied in the next fortnight, all the pumps replaced to get ready for the big swim meet. So, before they replace everything I’ve convinced them to let me have a go with the swimming pool to do an experiment.” He then produced a small perspex casserole dish, and a jug full of yellow liquid which instantly filled the room with the smell of vanilla.
“This” he said as he poured the thick, gloopy liquid into the dish “Is custard. Beautiful delicious tasting stuff it is too, but we’re not eating it today.” Once he had filled the rectangular dish with three or four jugs of this liquid he held it up for us to see.
“Now imagine that this is the swimming pool and instead of being a few inches deep, the entire thing, six feet deep and twenty five meters long of it, is filled with this liquid. Now watch.” From the pocket of his lab coat he produced a baseball and laid it on top of the custard. Naturally it sank to the bottom of the casserole dish and we looked at each other confused. As we were about to question, he raised one finger to gesture for silence and grinned broadly.
“Sunk. Just as you might expect. But....”

Thomas Olney, a "philosopher" visiting the town of Kingsport, Massachusetts with his family, is intrigued by a strange house on a cliff overlooking the ocean. It is unaccountably high and old and the locals have a generations-long dread of the place which no one is known to have visited. With great difficulty, Olney climbs the crag, approaches the house, and meets the mysterious man who lives there. The only door opens directly onto a sheer cliff, giving access only to mist and "the abyss". The transmittal of archaic lore and a life-altering encounter with the supernatural ensue, as Olney is not the only visitor that day. He returns to Kingsport the next day, but seems to have left his spirit behind in the strange, remote dwelling.
