Sinossi

Status Rituals Global examines the pervasive role of traditional ceremonies in reinforcing social hierarchies across various cultures and historical periods. It argues that these rituals, far from being mere traditions, actively maintain social order and perpetuate inequality. The book highlights how these carefully orchestrated displays of deference, obedience, and privilege subtly shape individuals' perceptions of their place in the social structure, solidifying acceptance of hierarchical arrangements. Did you know that these rituals often use symbolic language and performance to legitimize social rank? Understanding status rituals is crucial for comprehending the mechanisms through which power is maintained and cultural hegemony is established. The book takes an interdisciplinary approach, drawing from history, sociology, and anthropology to explore the symbolic language, performance aspects, and economic functions of status rituals. It progresses through three sections: first, defining core concepts; second, presenting case studies of royalty, religious authority, and economic elites; and third, synthesizing findings to discuss the implications for contemporary social movements. By examining less well-known examples and employing a comparative analysis, the book offers fresh perspectives on the ubiquitous phenomenon of status displays. One key insight is that status rituals are active instruments of social control and power consolidation, not just vestiges of the past.

The first practical handbook that helps individuals and organizations recognize and prevent microaggressions so that all employees can feel a sense of belonging.

Our workplaces and society are growing more diverse, but are we supporting inclusive cultures? While overt racism, sexism, ableism, and other forms of discrimination are relatively easy to spot, we cannot neglect the subtler everyday actions that normalize exclusion. Many have heard the term microaggression, but not everyone fully understands what they are or how to recognize them and stop them from happening.

In this book, Tiffany Jana and Michael Baran offer a clearer, more accessible term, subtle acts of exclusion, or SAEs, to emphasize the purpose and effects of these actions. After all, people generally aren't trying to be aggressive-usually they're trying to say something nice, learn more about a person, be funny, or build closeness. But whether in the form of exaggerated stereotypes, backhanded compliments, unfounded assumptions, or objectification, SAE are damaging to our coworkers, friends, and acquaintances. Jana and Baran give simple and clear tools to identify and address such acts, offering scripts and action plans for everybody involved: the subject, initiator, and observer. Knowing how to have these conversations in an open-minded, honest way will help us build trust and create stronger workplaces and healthier, happier people and communities.

I wish I could put this book into the hands of every man of retirement age. Buy two and give one away. - Erwin Lutzer
One of the things I learned in the NFL is that games are won or lost in the fourth quarter. How you finish the game typically determines the outcome. - Rick Nuzum
The Bible does not say anything about retirement, but it says everything about rehirement. Be a substitute teacher for your grandchildren - Ron Blue
Many Christian men have followed the American dream of retirement-moving to a warm climate, seeking comfort, and enjoying their golden years in leisure. But too often, the dream fades when health declines, and they return home to find distant relationships with their children and grandchildren. The years meant for rest and enjoyment can become years of regret.
In Helping Men Finish Well at Any Age, Dr. Duke Heller challenges men to redefine their retirement years with a purpose that aligns with God's calling. Through biblical wisdom, practical advice, and personal experience from over 60 years of marriage, Duke creates a roadmap to finishing life well-not in isolation, but in meaningful connection with family, faith, and impact.
Let this book guide you to a fulfilling and God-honoring finish as you prepare for the moment you hear, "Well done, good and faithful servant."
Invest your life in the people who will be sitting in the front row of your funeral. God cares how you finish!
Dr. Duke Heller is a retired dentist, devoted father, grandfather, and great-grandfather committed to the biblical principles of "finishing well." The author of two previous books draws on decades of marriage and personal experience to guide men seeking to restore and strengthen relationships with their children and grandchildren in retirement.

This in-depth Civil War study examines two early Union victories that were instrumental in deciding the conflict’s ultimate outcome. Some historians argue that the Civil War was decided in February 1862 with the collapse of the Confederate defenses of Forts Henry and Donelson on the Tennessee and Cumberland Rivers. This ambitious offensive opened the whole Tennessee Valley to Union invasion and control, effectively cutting the Confederacy in two. In domino fashion, the Confederates lost Nashville and central and western Tennessee. Memphis eventually fell, and the upper stretch of the Mississippi itself was brought under Union control. During this period, General Ulysses S. Grant came to prominence, putting him in place to lead the Union to victory. Where the South Lost the War is a major contribution to Civil war literature. Shedding light on an overlooked campaign and revising conventional judgments on key players and events, author Kendall D. Gott provides a detailed, incisive, and even controversial study of the operation’s events.

    Thrilling Days in Army Life

Thrilling Days in Army Life describes one of the classic encounters between Indians and the frontier army. In the summer of 1868, George A. Forsyth led fifty scouts to search out Cheyenne and Arapaho Indians who were conducting raids throughout the western Great Plains in Kansas. In this book, he relates the six-day siege in September that pitted his small force against 750 Cheyenne and Sioux. Because the battle occurred in a dry bed of the Arikaree fork of the Republican River in western Colorado and claimed the life of Forsyth’s brave lieutenant, Frederick H. Beecher, it would later become known as the Battle of Beecher Island.
Forsyth, who was brevetted brigadier general for the 1868 battle, had an action-packed career. In 1882, as commander of the Fourth Cavalry in New Mexico, he pursued the Chiricahua Apache across the border into Mexico. It was a raid full of dangerous traps, but he lived to tell about it.
Forsyth was an aide to Major General Philip H. Sheridan in 1864 and accompanied him on the dramatic ride to the rescue of Union troops at Cedar Creek. That episode is presented in a rush of detail. Forsyth ends with an eyewitness account of the surrender of the Confederacy at Appomattox Court House. Originally published in 1900, Thrilling Days in Army Life will be of interest to both frontier and Civil War buffs.
