  The Status Quo Bias is a psychological phenomenon in which individuals have a preference for the current state of affairs, often resisting change even when the alternatives might be more beneficial. This bias manifests in various aspects of life, from personal decisions to larger social, political, and economic systems. People tend to prefer things staying the same because it feels safer and more familiar, even if change could lead to improved outcomes. It is a powerful force that influences how we make choices, how we interact with others, and even how societies evolve over time. 
  At its core, the Status Quo Bias can be seen as a form of cognitive inertia—our minds prefer to stick with what we know, as a way of minimizing discomfort and uncertainty. This preference for the familiar is deeply rooted in our psychological and evolutionary makeup. Throughout history, stability was often synonymous with survival. In ancient environments, maintaining the status quo, or sticking to known behaviors and environments, increased the chances of safety and survival. However, in the modern world, where innovation and change are often necessary for progress, this bias can become a hindrance to growth and adaptation. 
  The effects of Status Quo Bias can be seen across many facets of life. In personal decision-making, individuals may resist making changes to their routines, relationships, or careers, even when they recognize that change could improve their situation. In the workplace, organizations may be slow to implement new technologies or adopt innovative strategies due to a preference for maintaining established systems and practices. On a societal level, political and social systems are often resistant to change, with entrenched interests and historical norms reinforcing the status quo.

  This audiobook is divided into units.While it provides different learning patterns and accommodates various needs, this audiobook focuses on helping you improve your ability to understand, speak, and memorise Vietnamese.  
  In Unit 1 you will hear Vietnamese decoded with each syllable spoken very slowly and clearly with repetition. Immediately before each sentence is spoken, you will hear the translation, so you will always understand what is being said. 
  Unit 2 focuses solely on increasing your listening ability, which will improve your abilities to engage in dialogue with a native Vietnamese speaker. This chapter requires you to listen very carefully to nuances in the language. 
  By Unit 3 you will already notice progress in your abilities to speak and understand Vietnamese. The spoken translation is followed by two repetitions in Vietnamese at a completely natural speed. While you are learning to process naturally spoken Vietnamese, Units 3 and 4 will help you memorise new vocabulary and full sentences. 
  In Unit 5 you can test yourself on how much you have learned. If you are having difficulties, we suggest you revisit the listening, speaking, or memorisation section of Units 1, 2 3 or 4, according to what you need more help with.

  It is widely accepted that political discourse in recent years has become more openly racist and more accepting of wildly implausible conspiracy theories. Dogwhistles and Figleaves explores ways in which such changes—both of which defied previously settled norms of political speech—have been brought about. Jennifer Saul shows that two linguistic devices, dogwhistles and figleaves, have played a crucial role. Some dogwhistles (such as "88", used by Nazis online to mean "Heil Hitler") serve to disguise messages that would otherwise be rejected as unacceptable, allowing them to be transmitted surreptitiously. Other dogwhistles (like the 1988 "Willie Horton" ad) work by influencing people in ways that they are not aware of, and which they would likely reject were they aware. Figleaves (such as "just asking questions") take messages that could easily be recognized as unacceptable, and provide just enough cover that people become more willing to accept them. Saul argues that these devices are important for the spread of racist discourse. She also shows how they contribute to the transmission of norm-violating discourse more generally, focusing on the case of wildly implausible conspiracist speech. This book is the first full-length exploration of dogwhistles and figleaves. It offers an illuminating and disturbing view of the workings of contemporary political discourse.
