Sinossi

New Deal Begins explores President Franklin Delano Roosevelt's ambitious policies during the crucial first year of his presidency in 1933, amidst the Great Depression. It examines the initial impact of the New Deal's relief programs, such as the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) and the Federal Emergency Relief Administration (FERA), and their role in shaping American history. The book objectively assesses whether these programs achieved their goals of alleviating unemployment and stimulating economic recovery, and how they altered the relationship between the government and its citizens. Government reports from the Roosevelt administration are used to provide a contemporary perspective on the programs' effectiveness. The book argues that while the New Deal provided immediate assistance, it also fundamentally changed the role of government in American society, setting a precedent for future intervention in the economy and individual lives. It begins by depicting pre-New Deal America and then progresses to detailed analyses of key relief programs established in 1933. The book avoids retrospective interpretations, prioritizing contemporary data to offer an objective assessment, and concludes with a discussion of the New Deal's lasting legacy and relevance to modern debates about government intervention and social welfare.

Dive into Northern Britain's Dark Ages in "a book which gives a satisfying and convincing account of this little-known part of Scotland's history" (Undiscovered Scotland).

Modern communications have driven motorways and pylons through the countryside, dwarfed us with TV and telephone masts, and drastically altered the way in which we move around, see, and understand Scotland. Recent politics and logistics have established borders and jurisdictions which now seem permanent and impervious. The Faded Map looks beyond these to remember a land that was once quiet and green. Alistair Moffat's "tireless research . . . and commanding knowledge" bring to vivid life the half-forgotten kings and kingdoms of two thousand years ago, from the time of the Romans into the early medieval period (Scottish Field).

In this "fascinating" account, Moffat describes the landscape these men and women moved through and writes of a Celtic society which spoke to itself in Old Welsh, where the Sons of Prophesy ruled, and the time when the English kings of Bernicia held sway over vast swathes of what is now Scotland (Alexander McCall Smith, author of Dream Angus). Heroes rode out of the mists to challenge them and then join with them, and the faint echo of the din of ancient battles can be heard as he takes the listener on a journey around a lost Scotland.

A dramatic narration of the great Sanskrit epic in fluid prose that enables those new to the text to easily assimilate its profound messages, while enjoying its vivid stories of gods, saints, sages, and ancient kings. In this volume, we see how Krishna saves his devotee from degradation. Beginning with the famous story of Ajamila, the brahmin who fell from an exalted position to become a ruthless robber and cheat, only to be miraculously redeemed at the very moment of death. Then we hear how Indra, king of the gods, insulted his guru and, as a result, was overpowered by the demonic races, led by Vritra, a supernatural colossus conjured for the god’s destruction. The twist in this tale is that the demon was a great saintly devotee of Krishna. Finally, we hear how Diti, mother of the demons, gains her salvation. Through all these narrations, we see how, no matter how fallen you are, if you have any divine service to your credit, Krishna will find a way to save you.

This audiobook is narrated by an AI Voice.
In the England of the 16th century, marked by wars of religion, conspiracies, and external threats, Elizabeth I ascends the throne with an intimate certainty: survival will be her first victory. Between the Tudor court and the European chessboard, she builds a reign based on prudence, political intelligence, and mastery of image, while facing rivals such as Mary, Queen of Scots and the challenge of Philip II. This volume traces the forging of the 'Virgin Queen', her most brilliant decisions and her harshest shadows: propaganda, espionage, the cost of stability, and the weight of a body transformed into the State. A complete portrait of a woman who turned her vulnerability into power and left a decisive mark on the identity of England.

Several schools of Zen developed in China in the 9th century. The Rinzai (Chinese, Lin-chi) sect of Zen was introduced to Japan by the Chinese priest Ensai in 1191. Rinzai Buddhism emphasizes the use of koans, paradoxical puzzles or questions that help the practitioner to overcome the normal boundaries of logic. Koans are often accompanied by shouts or slaps from the master, intended to provoke anxiety, leading to instant realization of the truth. These teachings influenced the warrior class and led to a Zen influence over the martial arts of archery and swordsmanship.
Soto Buddhism (Chinese, Ts'ao-tung) is another Zen sect that was transmitted from China to Japan. It arrived in Japan in 1227 upon the teacher Dogen's return from China. Soto emphasizes zazen, or sitting meditation, as the means to attain enlightenment. The Soto practitioner is encouraged to clear the mind of all thoughts and concepts, without making any effort towards enlightenment, until enlightenment occurs.
Whatever the method of reaching enlightenment, once reached we realize the state of enlightenment we sought was there within us all along. The method is the gate, but there need not be any gate, since the gate is always open. This is the gateless gate. Now, let us enter the Gateless Gate.
