Sinossi

Max Brand's 'The Black Rider' is a riveting exploration of the American West, intertwining themes of justice, revenge, and redemption. Set against the expansive backdrop of frontier life, Brand employs a vivid literary style that combines gripping action with rich character development, oscillating between the stark realities of survival and the romantic ideals of the cowboy hero. The novel integrates elements of classic Western literature while challenging the archetypal narratives, making it a significant contribution to the genre. Max Brand, the pen name of Frederick Schiller Faust, was an influential figure in early 20th-century American literature. Following a tumultuous childhood and a series of jobs that led him to the heart of the West, Brand infused his narratives with firsthand experiences, making them authentic and relatable. His background in journalism and theatre also contributed to his flair for dialogue and dramatic pacing, evident throughout 'The Black Rider.' This novel is a must-read for anyone intrigued by the complexities of the Western genre or the human condition. Brand's masterful storytelling resonates with both timeless themes and the grit of frontier authenticity, beckoning readers to immerse themselves in a world where the line between hero and villain often blurs.

The Yarkand Manner by Saki is a satirical short story that explores the peculiarities of human behavior through the lens of a fictional newspaper's editorial staff. The narrative begins with Sir Lulworth Quayne and his nephew discussing the phenomenon of migration among both animals and humans.
They reflect on a recent trend where the entire staff of the Daily Intelligencer, a prominent London newspaper, embarks on an ambitious journey to Eastern Turkestan, seeking adventure and new perspectives.Upon their return, however, the staff adopts a mysterious and aloof demeanor known as the "Yarkand manner." This change leads to a decline in communication and accessibility, causing confusion and concern among their colleagues and the public.

Dorothy Edwards, an only child, was born on the 18th August 1902 at Ogmore Vale in Glamorgan.

Her father was a headmaster and an early activist in the Independent Labour Party. At age 9 Dorothy, dressed in red, welcomed Keir Hardy on to the stage at Tonypandy during the national coal strike of 1912. She was taught that revolution was at hand, that class barriers would be a thing of the past.

Dorothy won a scholarship and boarded at Howell's School for Girls in Llandaff before moving to University College of South Wales and Monmouthshire where she read Greek and philosophy.

Her early hopes to be an opera singer were set to one side after graduating and the death of her father. Instead she took on part-time work to supplement her mother’s pension with whom she now lived.

Dorothy managed to write a number of short stories which appeared in the literary journals of the day. She spent several months with her mother in Vienna, all the time revising or writing before embarking on ‘Winter Sonata’, a short novel published in 1928.

Introductions to several members of the Bloomsbury Group meant a move to London and a division of her time between child-care for the family of Bloomsbury author David Garnett and the promise of an advance payment for her work on a new volume of stories.

However, Dorothy’s life was starting to spiral out of control; she was attracted to the Welsh nationalist movement but felt that her Welsh provincialism made her, in London at least, feel socially inferior. Leaving her mother dependent on a hired companion consumed her with guilt as did the end of an affair with a married musician.

On the 5th January 1934, having spent the morning burning her papers, Dorothy Edwards threw herself in front of a train near Caerphilly railway station.

Her suicide note read: "I am killing myself because I have never sincerely loved any human being all my life. I have accepted kindness and friendship and even love without gratitude, and given nothing in return."

A Nebula Award nominee, Dr. Bloodmoney is Hugo Award–winner Philip K. Dick's darkly comic riff on Stanley Kubrick's Cold War black comedy, Dr. Strangelove, a look at how humanity gets along after the end of the world. "A masterpiece."—Roberto BolañoWhat happens after the bombs drop? This is the troubling question Philip K. Dick addresses with Dr. Bloodmoney, or How We Got Along After the Bomb. It is the story of a world reeling from the effects of nuclear annihilation and fallout, a world where mutated humans and animals are the norm, and the scattered survivors take comfort from a disc jockey endlessly circling the globe in a broken-down satellite. And hidden among the survivors is Dr. Bloodmoney himself, the man responsible for it all. This bizarre cast of characters cajole, seduce, and backstab in their attempts to get ahead in what is left of the world, consequences and casualties be damned. A sort of companion to Dr. Strangelove—an unofficial and unhinged sequel—Dick’s novel is just as full of dark comedy and just as chilling.
