Summary

Criminal Justice Oversight explores the crucial role of independent oversight in the U.S. criminal justice system, examining how watchdogs, inspector generals, and external commissions work to ensure accountability and transparency in law enforcement. The book delves into the structures and functions of these oversight mechanisms at various levels, highlighting their impact on reducing corruption and preventing misconduct. For instance, independent investigations can uncover hidden patterns of abuse, while civilian review boards offer a platform for community input, fostering trust between law enforcement and the public. However, the book also addresses the persistent challenges that undermine effective criminal justice oversight, such as political interference and inadequate funding. These obstacles often limit the authority and independence of oversight bodies, hindering their ability to implement meaningful changes. Beginning with an introduction to the evolution of oversight, the book dedicates chapters to various oversight bodies, analyzing their legal frameworks and investigative powers. Using a balanced approach, Criminal Justice Oversight draws upon government reports, court documents, and academic studies to assess the impact of oversight on key indicators of criminal justice performance. It emphasizes the importance of independent oversight as essential for maintaining public trust and ensuring equitable outcomes, making it a valuable resource for anyone interested in true crime, political science, or criminal justice reform.

The author and Napoleon become boyhood friends when they are eight years old in Corsica. They separate when Napoleon is transferred from the Military College of Brienne to another college in Paris in 1784. Napoleon has a stern or disdainful personality. He looks down on the French, who have taken over Corsica. At age 16 Napoleon finds fault with the military education, sending his recommendations to the Minister of War. Because of this speaking out, he is speedily graduated and sent to a regiment of artillery. After diplomatic travel, the author again meets Napoleon in Paris at a time when both are in dire financial straits. After witnessing an angry-mob scene, the author goes to Stuttgart as Secretary of Legation while Napoleon returns to Corsica. In 1799 the two return to Paris. The French government wants to send Napoleon to a new location as brigadier-general of infantry. he rejects the offer and is thus struck off the list of general officers. Eventually Napoleon gets command of Paris. In 1796 Napoleon marries Josephine. His attentions to her alternate between violent outrages resulting in infidelity and the other other extreme of repentant gentleness. During the Napoleonic wars Napoleon's troops progress through Europe--first Italy, then Austria. (Summary by Bill Boerst)

    Strictly G.I.: A Woman’s War Through Letters
In 1942, Wanda set off on a journey unlike any other—one that would place her among the first women to serve overseas in World War II. As a member of the 149th WAAC Post Headquarters Company, she bore witness to a rapidly changing world, navigating the challenges of military life with unwavering spirit, humor, and resilience.
Drawn from a rare collection of letters and V-mail, Strictly G.I. offers a firsthand account of the war from a soldier who defied convention. From training at Fort Des Moines to marching before generals in North Africa, Wanda’s words paint a vivid picture of enlisted life—equal parts duty, camaraderie, and sacrifice.
Yet, for all her dedication, Wanda and her fellow WAACs were denied the same rights as their male counterparts: no overseas pay, no veterans’ benefits, no guarantees if they were wounded—or worse. Despite it all, Wanda rose quickly through the ranks, forging friendships, finding love, and documenting the reality of war in letters that echo with emotion and insight.
In one chilling reflection, she writes:
"We have a radio in our 'room,' and whenever we get a shortwave station from the States, it makes a person stop and think. You don’t know—you can’t possibly know what war really is—in all reality."
More than a historical record, Strictly G.I. is a testament to perseverance, a glimpse into the heart and mind of a woman who stood her ground in a world not yet ready for her.
