Sinossi

In "Samantha on Children's Rights," Marietta Holley employs her signature blend of humor and social commentary to examine the pressing issues surrounding children's rights in a rapidly industrializing America. Through the lens of her beloved character Samantha, Holley articulates a progressive vision for childhood that champions justice, education, and emotional well-being. Written in the late 19th century, the book reflects the era's evolving views on childhood and education, deftly combining satire with heartfelt advocacy, while navigating the complexities of legal and social frameworks governing youth at the time. Marietta Holley, often referred to as the "Mark Twain of womanhood," was a prolific author and social reformer whose lived experiences greatly informed her work. Born into a time of significant societal shifts, Holley witnessed firsthand the challenges faced by women and children. Inspired by her own encounters with social injustice, she infused her writing with a fervent desire to spotlight and eradicate inequalities, particularly in the realms of education and children'Äôs rights. Readers seeking an insightful and entertaining exploration of children's rights will find "Samantha on Children's Rights" to be both enlightening and thought-provoking. Holley's approachable style and keen observations encourage critical reflection on contemporary societal norms, making this not only a historical text but also a relevant commentary on ongoing conversations about children's welfare.

An atmospheric scientist explains why global climate change mitigation and energy decarbonization demand American diplomacy, technology, and policy

Professor of environmental engineering Daniel Cohan argues that escaping the gravest perils of climate change will first require American diplomacy, technological innovation, and policy to catalyze decarbonization globally. Combining his own expertise along with insights from more than a hundred interviews with diplomats, scholars, and clean-technology pioneers, Cohan identifies flaws in previous efforts to combat climate change. He highlights opportunities for more successful strategies, including international "climate clubs" and accelerated development of clean energy technologies. Grounded in history and emerging scholarship, this book offers a forward-looking vision of solutions to confronting climate gridlock and a clear-eyed recognition of the challenges to enacting them.

The ancient world was full of many fantastic cities and places, and like today’s major cities, the great ancient cities were hubs of trade, religion, and science. Writing was first invented in ancient cities, and many important scientific discoveries were also made in them, some of which are still used in the modern world. Among the many cities of the ancient world, Rome and Athens may come to mind first, but the city of Babylon in the land of Mesopotamia was already an ancient, venerated city when the others were still inconsequential settlements.
Today, Babylon has become a byword for greed, excess, and licentiousness, mostly due to its mention in the Bible, but a closer examination reveals that Babylon was so much more, and even perhaps the most important city in the ancient world. Ancient Babylon was home to great dynasties that produced some of the world’s most influential leaders, most notably Hammurabi and Nebuchadnezzar, and these rulers invoked their wills on the entire ancient Near East and have been remembered as both progressive and cruel all at the same time. Babylon was also the seat of culture in ancient Mesopotamia and the place where scholars made amazing scientific advances that would not be eclipsed for several centuries. An examination of ancient Babylon demonstrates that it was truly the first great city in the ancient world.
Of course, the sheer span of history between Babylon’s power and today has produced plenty of historical questions and controversy. One of the things people most closely associate Babylon with is the Hanging Gardens, which, like the Great Pyramid of Giza, were considered both a technological marvel and an aesthetic masterpiece. Ancient historians believed that the Hanging Gardens were constructed around the 7th century B.C. after the second rise of Babylon.

A raw and riveting coming-of-age story about the wild love of teenage friendships and the casual oppression of nineties rape culture.

Emelia Symington-Fedy grew up with her girl gang on the railroad tracks of a small town in British Columbia. Unsupervised and wild, the girls explored the power and shortcomings of "best" friendships and their growing sexuality.

Two decades later an eighteen-year-old girl is murdered on Halloween on the same tracks, and Symington-Fedy returns to her hometown to stay with her mother, who is fearful of a murderer at large.

While the media narrows its focus on how the girl dared be alone on the tracks, Symington-Fedy slowly comes to terms with the mistreatment of her own teenage body. Giving a bold and often darkly humorous first-hand account of nineties rape culture and the sexual coercion that still permeates girlhood, Symington-Fedy holds her hometown close and accountable and exposes the subtle ways that misogyny shows up daily.
