Sinossi

To most students of the Peninsular War the name Robert Craufurd evokes images of a battle-hardened martinet, flogging his men across Portugal and Spain, driving them hard and generally taking a tough stance against anything and everything that did not meet with his own strict disciplinarian code. But that is only a partial picture of this most complex character, and it is the other side of Craufurd’s personality that is revealed in this, the first full-length biography to be written in the last hundred years. Craufurd’s letters to his wife are published here for the first time, and they show that he was a far more interesting and varied man in his private life than he appeared to be on campaign. Ian Fletcher follows Craufurd’s controversial career from India, Ireland and South America to the Iberian Peninsula where he achieved immortality as one of Wellington’s finest generals.

Annie Oakley was without a doubt the greatest markswoman who ever lived. Born in 1860 in Darke County, Ohio, she built herself from obscure and impoverished beginnings into the best known woman of her time.Courtney Ryley Cooper's classic biography traces Oakley's extraordinary journey and separates the facts from the many legends that have sprung up in its wake. We learn of her enduring marriage to Frank Butler and their first meeting, a shooting match in which the seemingly delicate young girl defeated the professional marksman; her association with Buffalo Bill Cody's Wild West Show and its triumphal tour through Europe and America; the train crash that nearly took her life; and her years as an actress and teacher. Her story remains to this day one of the grandest to have come out of the Old West.

'Endgame: Inside the Royal Family and the Monarchy’s Fight for Survival' by Omid Scobie examines the challenges facing the British monarchy following the death of Queen Elizabeth II. Scobie, a seasoned royal reporter, uses his extensive experience and access to insider sources, including Palace staff, royal acquaintances, and the royals themselves, to provide a detailed account of the institution's struggles. The book highlights the monarchy's issues with outdated views on race, class, and finance, set against the backdrop of a world that is rapidly evolving. Scobie's analysis questions whether the monarchy can adapt and make necessary changes to remain relevant and survive in the modern era, presenting a critical look at an institution facing a pivotal moment in its history.
