  Before 1910 the American chestnut was one of the most common trees in the eastern United States. An important natural resource, chestnut wood was preferred for woodworking, fencing, and building construction, as it was rot resistant and straight grained. These disorders can range in severity from mild joint discomfort to life-threatening systemic inflammation, often involving multiple organs. The key characteristic of many rheumatic diseases is the involvement of the immune system in causing inflammation and damage to the body’s tissues. 
  One of the hallmarks of rheumatology is its emphasis on autoimmunity. In autoimmune diseases, the body's immune system mistakenly attacks its own tissues, considering them foreign. This immune dysregulation is often the root cause of many rheumatic conditions, and understanding the immune mechanisms at play is crucial for accurate diagnosis and effective treatment. The immune response can lead to chronic inflammation, tissue damage, and, over time, the destruction of joints and other vital structures. In some cases, the underlying cause is still not fully understood, which makes the diagnosis and management of these conditions complex.
