Sinossi

"Floating Bridges" explores the innovative engineering behind these structures, examining how they support traffic while accommodating marine vessels. These bridges offer solutions for crossing wide bodies of water where traditional bridges are impractical. The book dives into the structural engineering principles and operational mechanisms that make these adaptable structures possible, highlighting their cost-effectiveness and environmental sensitivity.

Did you know that floating bridges can be designed to part like the Red Sea, allowing ships to pass? Or that these bridges represent a balance between terrestrial and marine transportation demands?

Beginning with a historical overview of pontoon bridges, the book progresses into the core principles of buoyancy, stability, and load distribution. It then analyzes various design approaches, including anchored floating bridges and submerged floating tunnels. A key focus is placed on the operational aspects, detailing the mechanisms for ship passage and safety protocols. The book concludes with case studies of existing floating bridges around the world, examining their design challenges and long-term performance.

A unique aspect of "Floating Bridges" is its focus on sustainable design, exploring environmentally friendly materials and energy-efficient systems. The book presents complex engineering concepts in an accessible manner, making it valuable for civil engineers, architects, and anyone interested in innovative infrastructure solutions. It emphasizes the integration of these bridges into sustainable design practices.

Throughout history, humankind has marveled at the natural world, from the majesty of towering mountains to the depths of the oceans. Yet, some phenomena defy explanation, remaining elusive and enigmatic. One such phenomenon is the sonic anomaly known as Sound's Fury—a violent, inexplicable burst of sound that seems to break all the rules of nature. Its origins, causes, and implications have puzzled scientists, captivated the public, and left a trail of unanswered questions. This book delves deep into the sonic enigma, exploring its mystery and the far-reaching impact it has had on the world.
Sound's Fury, a term coined to describe these overwhelming sonic events, is not a fictional occurrence but a genuine, puzzling phenomenon that has been observed around the globe. The first reports came from isolated locations where communities were shaken by intense, thunderous sounds that appeared out of nowhere, yet left no visible source. It wasn't long before similar incidents began to spread across different regions, sparking intrigue, fear, and a sense of helplessness among those who experienced them. What makes this phenomenon even more baffling is the absence of any clear pattern or consistent explanation.
Over time, experts have tried to analyze these events from a scientific standpoint. Acousticians, geophysicists, and even space scientists have worked tirelessly to find answers. They have proposed several theories, ranging from natural phenomena like sonic booms or atmospheric anomalies to more complex, speculative causes, such as unknown seismic activities or extraterrestrial influences. Despite their best efforts, none of these explanations have fully captured the essence of Sound's Fury or provided a definitive answer.

An Inspiring Memoir, for Fans of Jane Goodall, Dian Fossey, and Frans De Waal.
In her enchanting memoir, Dr. Gladys Kalema-Zikusoka, Uganda’s first wildlife veterinarian, tells the remarkable story from her animal-loving childhood to her career protecting endangered mountain gorillas and other wild animals. She is also the defender of people as a groundbreaking promoter of human public health and an advocate for revolutionary integrated approaches to saving our planet. In an increasingly interconnected world, animal and human health alike depend on sustainable solutions and Dr. Gladys has developed an innovative approach to conservation among the endangered Mountain Gorillas of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest and their human neighbors.
Walking with Gorillas takes the reader on an incredible personal journey with Dr. Gladys, from her early days as a student in Uganda, enduring the assassination of her father during a military coup, to her veterinarian education in England to establishing the first veterinary department for the Ugandan government to founding one of the first organizations in the world that enables people to coexist with wildlife through improving the health and wellbeing of both. Her award-winning approach reduced the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on critically endangered mountain gorillas.
In the face of discrimination and a male dominated world, one woman’s passion and determination to build a brighter future for the local wildlife and human community offers inspiration and insights into what is truly possible for our planet when we come together.

We are at an exciting threshold for the development and deployment of private space stations and more advanced designs from various countries. This trend shows how quickly space technologies are developing.
The advancements in cheaper rockets to carry more payloads into Earth’s orbit in a less costly manner is another trend which is supporting the development of these new space stations and space transportation options.
The last few years a lot of companies and governments are making plans to develop and deploy a variety of space stations and moon bases. This seems like to good time to update everyone with what are these latest plans, space technologies, transportation options and more.
I’ve tried to include all I could find on new space technologies and plans relevant to working and living in space.
I wrote a book on Space in 2017 titled “Designing and Building Space Colonies” along with another ten space related books later on. So this is one of my favorite genres.

Most would not expect a book about a stroke to be entertaining, but this memoir will force you to laugh through a tragedy, then cry, then laugh again.Avrel Seale was fifty, did not smoke or drink, had low blood pressure, and had hiked more than two hundred miles the year a stroke nearly ended his life. In an instant, he was teleported into the body of an old man—unbalanced, shaky, spastic, and half-paralyzed. Overnight, he was plunged into a world of brain surgeons, nurses, insurance case managers, and an abundance of therapists.Seale leads us through the harrowing day of his stroke and emergency brain surgery with minute-by-minute intensity. We then follow him through ICU, a rehab hospital, and a neuro-recovery group-living center, where we meet a memorable cast of other stroke survivors and also those recovering from auto accidents and gunshots. Finally home, Seale leads us through a new life of firsts, including returning to work, to driving, to playing guitar, to camping, and even to writing a book—all with one hand. What emerges from his humor (“elegant but devastating”) is a revealing critique of the hospital experience, the insurance industry, and rehab culture. And his nothing-off-the-table quest for recovery shows both the sobering struggles and inspiring possibilities of life after a stroke in twenty-first century America.

In Atlas of AI (2021), Kate Crawford explores the twisted, complex world of artificial intelligence. She argues that AI is neither artificial nor intelligent, but rather a material system built from Earth’s rare resources and cheap labor, with severe environmental and human costs. Crawford explores the origins of AI and examines the processes that turn it into a double-edged sword, capable of harming as well as helping humanity. Governments and corporations are using AI to reinforce their power and control, and we must be aware of the pitfalls.
